Is it possible to transfer from community college to a 4-year college to pursue a Music major?
Are there any community colleges with especially good music departments?

Of course it is possible, but the key questions are
- Will the 4-year college accept you based on either or both of your academic history and your performance at an audition (where required) and,
- How many of your community college credits will transfer

The strength of the program at a community college will be highly dependent on the how good their current teachers happen to be, and some community colleges change teachers pretty frequently. For an applied teacher, a sample lesson would be a good idea.

The issue of transferring credit from the community college to the four-year college is highly dependent on the two schools involved, so you would have to speak with the admissions offices at each to get an understanding of what will and what will not transfer. Music schools or departments within 4-year colleges and universities are notorious for not accepting credit for music theory courses taken elsewhere, because they all tend to have their favorite ways of teaching that particular subject.

And it might be easier in some areas than others. Without knowing specifics, I understand that there are cc programs in both California and New York that allow fairly seamless transfer from certain cc’s with music programs into the states’ public systems. I’d imagine that the option is available in other states as well.

I would start first by looking within your own state’s borders.
