Transfer from Georgetown to NYU? did i pick the wrong college :((

Hi everyone! I’m a rising sophomore at Georgetown University.

I’m posting because I want advice about whether I should transfer schools. The top 2 schools I got into during my college admissions process were Gtown and NYU. For the longest time, I’d always known I wanted to go to school in New York but visiting Gtown’s campus was cool too. My parents’ weren’t big fans of NYU so I picked Gtown. After all, I was planning to study business and international affairs at the time.

However, after a painfully tough virtual first year of college doing business classes, I realized my career interests lied elsewhere: media, entertainment, music, etc. These are not Georgetown’s strong suits…but they are NYU’s.

Even before I realized what it is I really wanted to pursue academically, I would fantasize about what life would have been like if I chose NYU. After all, not being on Georgetown’s campus my freshman year left a lot of room for me to doubt.

Georgetown has an English major that looks pretty interesting but the “Media, Culture & Communication” major at NYU feels PERFECT for me. I’m trying hard to weigh the pros and cons of each school and ensure that I’m not just romanticizing NYU and New York so I need advice from a different pov. I’m scared that there are opportunities I’m missing out on by not being at NYU, a school that is directly catered to my interests. But Georgetown has great things to offer too.

Should I transfer? Or is it not that deep? After all it is just 4 years of my life.

Can you pay the cost to attend NYU?

Sounds like NYU is your preferred school….NYC would be an amazing place to go to college!

If you can afford to go to NYU I’d definitely apply. If you get in, then you can ponder whether to actually go. I think NYU has Spring admits (due in November) so you wouldn’t need to wait a wait a entire year either.

Do you actually have a transfer offer or do you think that you will be accepted because you were before?

Nope I don’t have an offer, I guess I’m just wondering if I should even try going for it. Do you think it’s easier to get in when applying before freshman year or when transferring?

Maybe for one year but after that, I’m not too sure. Gtown itself is an expensive school so I’m also wondering how that would affect me financially, me going from an already expensive school to another

Thanks!

Thanks for the advice!

Do you have FA from Georgetown? NYU is notoriously stingy with FA, and more so with transfers. The cost of attendance is around $80k just FYI.

Nope Gtown didn’t give me FA so it’s probably less likely NYU would :frowning: one NYU plus is that they have a few merit scholarships while Gtown has none but it is still more likely that Gtown would give me FA sometime down the line

Have you visited NYU?

NYU has limited student housing. Off campus housing in lower Manhattan can be very expensive. Are you good with that?

The grass is not always greener. My friend’s son graduated NYU several years ago with a degree in music management (not sure if this is the exact name) and he has been struggling for years to find steady employment in the field. The jobs are very low paying, temporary, no benefits, etc.

I would ask NYU where the recent grads in your major are employed before deciding whether to transfer.

Georgetown guarantees to meet full need for all…so if you didn’t get aid, this implies that your parents have the resources to pay over $70,000 a year for college. I think NYU is actually more expensive than Georgetown now.

Will your parents pay for you to attend NYU IF you get accepted as a transfer.

My daughter just graduated from NYU with a BS in MCC. She still loves and lives in NYC but NYU is a city school without a campus. That can be a hurdle for some since you really have to reach out to establish friendships. On the plus side, lots and lots of job and internship opportunities in your selected field because of the school connections. Hope that helps!

It does help, thank you! NYU definitely has different pros and cons to Georgetown so I guess I’ll just think hard about which factors matter to me most. Congrats to your daughter!

That’s a good point, this field is not an easy one to break into so the NYU degree can only help so much. I’ll keep that in mind and do some research on the grads. Thanks!

Nope, I haven’t visited (yet). I didn’t consider off-campus housing would be super expensive but it makes sense considering it’s Manhattan. If I couldn’t find a way to pay for it myself, I’d hate to burden my parents with that.

I’m a current NYU student majoring in Media and Communication so let me know if you wanna learn more about the experience! I’m actually looking to transfer out because of the lack of campus environment but it’s a truly unique experience out here in the city!

Have you considered USC or Loyola-Marymount for your interests ?
