Hi, same guy here who made the NYU to USC thread. To reiterate, I'm currently a student at NYU, just starting my sophomore year. I absolutely hate it here and really want to get out ASAP. Seeing that Boston College, as school that seems like a good fit for me, has mid-year transfer admission, I have my eye now on enrolling there in January.

I have stellar grades at NYU, my GPA after my freshman year was a 3.93. I had a lot of AP credits that carried over so I'm already almost a junior at NYU technically. In high school I had close to a 4.0 and my SATs were 800 Writing, 740 Critical Reading and 640 Math. I was student council president and captain of the varsity cross-country team.

I really just don't fit in at NYU and have found that I don't like NYC at all. I was accepted to Boston College too, and wish I had gone there instead, but I was nervous about being so far from home that I couldn't easily take a train back anytime. Will it hurt me that I turned them down originally, especially if I explain my reasoning?

So what do you guys thing my chances are of being accepted to BC as a mid-year transfer? I know its tough, but both my college GPA and SAT scores are well above the averages listed on the website, so should I be optimistic? Please respond, and thanks in advanced.

I’d say you’re definitely in. Son got accepted for this Fall as a transfer from BU (decided to transfer to Notre Dame) and his SATs weren’t as good as yours – same type of college GPA. I know my son is much happier at ND than he was at BU – too much of a city school for his liking.

Get going on the apps and documents and apply — you’ll be at Chestnut Hill in January if you want to :)

Thank you!.. and bump! more advice would be appreciated

I’d say you have a REALLY good chance. I haven’t actually transferred myself, I’m just lurking on this site because I’m looking forward to transferring out of NYU also. But just from what I’ve seen around, you have a pretty damn good chance. Why don’t you retake the SAT, bring up your math score, so you might even consider some other schools too?

It’s just so refreshing to see someone actually hating on NYU. I’m in Gallatin, and everyone’s all very… “NYU’s so awesome!!!” I don’t have anything against NYU, but I was kind of like you, I was afraid of being far from home. I had no idea that, apparently I’m not a city school person, let alone an NYC type of person. And the tuition is just over-kill.

So good luck to ya, though you probably don’t need it! :)

I wasn’t aware that I could retake my SAT now that I’m already out of high school. Either way, its probably too late now considering the application is due Nov. 1st. Are you a freshman or a sophomore at NYU, whateveryo?

I REALLY don’t see any need for you to re-take your SAT’s – you’ll be absolutely fine for schools such as a BC, ND, Wake Forest, etc. Word of caution though, if you’re interested at all in ND, follow their transfer course requirements to the “t” (found on their website). You’re definitely good to go at BC though – wouldn’t waste the time on re-taking SATs.

By the way, would anybody be willing to read my essay and critique it?

Yeah, like people already made it clear, you’re pretty much set for BC. But if I were you, I’d try to be more ambitious especially since your credentials are strong, and also because BC is a school that’s sort of comparable to NYU or even less competitive (feel free to disagree). I’m a freshman by the way ;P. I’d offer to critique your essays, but I’m sure you’re gonna be fine.

Anyone can take the SAT’s anytime they like, it’s just that a lot of college students are not aware of this I guess, and don’t bother doing that for transfer applications (yay for me?). I’m gonna be applying as a fall transfer, so I’ll be retaking my SAT this Saturday, actually, since my apps won’t be due until like March. Nov 1s, eh? Godspeed to both of us.

As others have said, I think you’ll be fine for BC.
I just wanted to say that I just transferred from NYU to Michigan this year (I’m a sophomore). Like whateveryo, I would say look at some other schools too- try to pinpoint what exactly you don’t like about NYU. Is it being in a big city in general? Or just NYC?

I didn’t retake my SATs when I transferred and I had a around a 2100 or so (don’t really remember haha) But I also had to audition for my program so that a huge part of it. bets of luck!

Anyone else have any thoughts? Getting ready to finalize my application and going to a transfer students day this Friday.
