Transfer from NYU to Northwestern

I'm a sophomore at NYU looking to transfer to Northwestern for the fall quarter.
Stats:
HS GPA: 3.5 unweighted, 6 APs..probably a 3.8 weighted
SATs: 610 Verbal/650 Math (yeah they suck for any top school, but hopefully NU won't care as a junior transfer)

College GPA: 3.8, 3.5, 3.3, and a possible 3.8 this semester (last semester was terrible, and I have a legitimate excuse as to why I did poorly)..so total GPA is a 3.5 w/ challenging courseload
Amazing college recs/essay
Had 2 awesome internships - I'm now at ABC News, and one of the recs is coming from a producer there
Summer class at LSE this past summer

...i think that's the core of everything. Any chance?

Of course you have a chance. But what's your major?

I'm doubling with history and econ at NYU. I probably won't be able to double at Northwestern, so I'll probably do either poli sci or econ there. Do you know if those 2 majors are good at Northwestern? b/c i know NYU econ is ranked about top 5.

If either of those are your majors, I think you have a very good chance. I thought you might be trying to get into Medill, which would probably have been harder.

I'm not sure how NU holds up for your majors.

NU's econ is stronger than NYU, which isn't top 5 in econ by the way. Poli sci got mixed review...and ranked 21st.

where are you getting these rankings? b/c NYU is highly respected for its econ program

US News graduate ranking.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology 5.0
University of Chicago 5.0

Harvard University (MA) 4.9
Princeton University (NJ) 4.9
Stanford University (CA) 4.9
University of California–Berkeley 4.9

Yale University (CT) 4.8

Northwestern University (IL) 4.6

University of Pennsylvania 4.5

University of California–San Diego 4.3

Columbia University (NY) 4.2
University of California–Los Angeles 4.2
University of Michigan–Ann Arbor 4.2
University of Wisconsin–Madison 4.2

New York University 4.1

well i got in!...surprisingly. i'm still indecisive about what to major in. i'm interested in their econ, poli sci, and cog sci majors, but does anyone know how poli sci and cog sci rank there?

Also, I'm still hesitant to leave NYC...can anyone convince me to uproot to the midwest? (I'm going to visit this week, so any feedback would be great...e.g. their career services)

Can you PM your final stats ejd 7, I'm interested in transferring to NU as well.

well my final stats are essentially in my first post...to add to that, i think i got in b/c of my recs and essays. my grades at NYU were average, nothing outstanding and my SATs suck. However, I have extensive internship experience, and i wrote unique essays in a style they're looking for - that is, they were liberally charged and I spoke about research I wanted to continue there, which were both true to what I believe/want. Also, I think they're looking for people with not just perfect grades, but someone who will prove to be reputable alumni, and you should show that in your writing.

That's my opinion thus far, however, I'm not on the admissions staff, and I'm still learning about the school.

Disregard those rankings, those are for graduate programs which are quite different than undergraduate. You are right in saying that NU econ is top 5. If you're going to major in econ, NU is worth moving from NYU.

thanks for the advice ejd7

Not only is econ more respected at Northwestern, but the school overall has a considerably better reputation. You will do fine regardless of your final major.

thanks everyone for all the input - it's been helpful
