Transfer from NYU

I go to NYU CAS

My major is Economics

MY GPA: 3.85

I just want to know how hard it would be to get in to

Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Upenn, Princeton, Yale, Johns Hopkins, University of Chicago, Stanford, Georgetown or Northwestern...

I have experienced some horrific stuff at NYU and can't continue studying here... I have gotten into a few of the schools above like Cornell, Northwestern, Georgetown... would that play into my advantage?

Also is it a good idea to retake the SAT even if you are a transferring sophomore?

What else matters other than GPA and the essay?

Thanks :)

For transfer rates, google the Common Data Set for each school. In addition: P does not accept transfers and B is need-aware for transfer admissions.

The fact that you were accepted into some selective schools as a fr means that your HS record and test scores were very good, and since soph transfers have a relatively short college record, these will be given more weight. But are you going to be a soph or jr transfer, haven’t you finished 1 yr at NYU?

Retaking the SAT depends on what it is now, it seems from your fr admissions, that it should be fine.

Other important factors: rigor of courses, reason for transfer, LORs

Actually I tested very low in SATs… I got 2160… :(

What are LORs? and why should the reason for transfer matter? is there actually a standard or a “good” reason?

Thank You for your quick reply!

LOR = Letter of Recommendation; you usually need 2 from profs/TAs for the schools you listed.

The reason for wanting to transfer is very important, it is the topic of the main CA essay. Reasons range anywhere from the current school not having an academic field of interest, to wanting to be closer to home, to wanting a different social or academic atmosphere, etc.

You must understand that particularly for the schools you listed, they will be sensitive to students simply wanting to transfer up to a more prestigious college. Heck, look at many of the threads on this forum at any time and that’s exactly the intent.

Oh I see! I just started researching and I’m new at this whole thing…

Thank you for your kind reply!

P.S. Does that mean it’ll be harder to transfer into a school then get in as RD as a highschool student? I heard that it was the other way around?!

In general, for the level of schools you’ve listed, you’ve heard some incorrect information. Like I said in post #2, look at the CDSs for the schools, they give transfer data.

Just curious, what horrific stuff did you see at NYU haha?
