Hi, I’ve got a long story and am looking for advise. I’m from Athens and took 33 hours of courses at OU, most of it in science, when I was in high school, so I more or less know what OU is like. I wanted to see the world of non-Athens, so I went to Ohio State. I’m in the honors program here, but all that means is that I have to repeat GE’s I have credit for, which is kind of obnoxious, but also good in some ways because I’m somewhat unsure about my choice in major. I started in molecular genetics, more because my parents wanted me in science than anything else. I’ve always been interested in most things, but apparently I should have learned from Chem 1510 at OU that I’m not that interested in chemistry (I did fine in the class but it was miserable). Now I’m in second semester chemistry at OSU, and I know I don’t want to do more of it. I’ve never been less engaged in a class, and yet I’m putting in like 30 hours of work just to that class! I’m doing fine; I have a B in chem and the rest of my grades should be good (probably A’s with a chance of B’s). The problem is that I don’t have a passion for genetics and the idea of doing research in it has about as much appeal as would sleeping on the floor of the flooded laundry room of my dorm. I think I want to study history or political science, and OU sounds really appealing, if I could get into HTC, which I’d say I’m pretty competitive for even as a transfer, since my high school grades would matter for the last time, and I was salutatorian of my hs and got 35 ACT/1580 SAT. Also the 33 hours at OU with a 4.0 probably would help. Having one-on-one classes with a professor in a subject I’m interested in sounds pretty idyllic these days. OSU feels very career oriented, and while I understand that I need to be employed (I swear I would study science if I didn’t hate every minute of it and have strong passions in the liberal arts) I tend to (perhaps naively) believe in education as more than a means to an end. I know a lot OU classes aren’t that hard, (at least compared to Zellmer’s Chem 1220 lol) and I swear I’m not trying to get an easier education. I just want to learn a lot of stuff I’m interested in and the honors program at OU seems like it would be perfect. Any advise as to whether you think transferring to OU would help me get the education I want or if transferring should typically be avoided would be appreciated. I’m not really into the whole party school thing, which is probably about equal at both schools? I dunno but I have friends who can pass a whole week sober at both places haha. Anyhow thanks for reading this rambly mess of my life.
I’m a freshman if I didn’t clarify that. Sorry!
I would contact the HTC at OU. I have heard that in some circumstances students at OU can be accepted into the HTC after attending as a regular student. How that works I don’t know. Good luck.
Thank you.
