***Transfer from Penn State to UVA***

Hey guys I am a sophomore at Penn State main campus...I am done with the 10 business pre-req courses and I have a 3.3 gpa. I am from northern va and was wondering what my chances of transferring into UVA's college of Arts and Sciences with the intention of becoming an ECON major. I dominated all my business courses here at Penn State but got tripped up a little bit in my math courses. I currently am sitting at 42 completed hours with 12 hours being completed through summer and aps. PS I love Penn State but would love UVA even more!

Thanks!!

3.3 gpa is really low esp. since you’re coming from Penn State, try to get it up to a 3.6-3.7 to consider yourself “competitive”

lol what does that mean “coming from Penn State” I mean thats fine about the low GPA and all but seriously Penn State is in top 25 undergraduate business schools in country as well as top 50 overall so you implying that its a bad school just tells me that you dont know what your talking about.

Dude listen, I transferred to UVA, my transfer class had a mixture of people from William & Mary, Columbia, Harvard, Georgetown, Berkeley, NVCC, VTech, etc. Penn State is a fine state school, but it’s not in the same league as the first five schools I mentioned. The general rule is that the more prestigious your school is, the lower GPA you’ll need to be admitted and the less “prestigious” your school is, the higher GPA you’ll need. The people from community colleges and other state schools need a really high GPA, during transfer orientation the dean tells you straight up “your GPA at UVA will drop by a whole point” (I laughed at this b/c my previous institution was just as prestigious as UVA and more rigorous), so if you can only pull a 3.3 at Penn State, how are you going to do academically at UVA? (that’s what the Dean Roberts is going to think when looking at your app) that’s all. Good luck trying to transfer. Sorry, I’m not one to flower the OPs.

“I love Penn State…”
No sense in leaving it then. Seriously, outside of Pennsylvania PSU is just another good state U. If you’re sure that you would “love UVA even more” why didn’t you apply there before PSU?

It could be a financial or location thing…the OP did state he/she was from NoVA.

Could be. Until the OP responds it could be a lot of reasons that may impact his chances of getting into UVA.

You all are being a bit harsh. And wahoomb, no way did you mean NVCC is a better school than PSU…yes, they may have the transfer agreement in place, but let’s face it, PSU is a good school, especially for business. Stop hating.

To the OP: Stop asking for chances and instead, work on your application. The deadline for spring admission is just a month away. Get crackin! I suggest you apply…even if you get rejected, you can still apply for Fall 2010 admission. Transfer admissions are too up in the air, everyone has a different reason/case, and there’s no way to judge your “chances”. Foot the $60 and try if you really love UVa so much

shoebox10, if you read carefully I said “the first five schools I mentioned”, NVCC was number 6 on my list.

You still put it into that group, I’m sure everyone thought the same thing.

Also, while were at it, since VT is “number 7”, I would say all of the schools in that group, except NVCC, are higher caliber. I know this is a UVa board, but I came from VT’s engineering school and I think in some respects, it was harder, and a majority of the world tells me “what, you went from VT to UVa for engineering!??!”
…like I said, stop hating. Be constructive…

LOL, sore spot huh? No one is hating, but as a transfer yourself you know very well that if you apply from Georgetown or Hopkins with a 3.2, meh, you have a pretty good chance to get in, if you apply from UMaryland, GMU or JMU with the same GPA with a 3.2, there’s no way in hell you’d get in.

Again, depends. UMd’s engineering program is superb. Also, someone applying after their freshman year with a 3.2 might have legit reasons for transferring. You can’t classify transfers by just their GPA. We’re bigger and better than just that 3 digit number.

Also, not a sore spot. I love both schools, and I’m big enough to know that they’re both great in their own ways. I just think information should be given truthfully, not bitterly. I’m here aren’t I? And according to you, I was close to “no way in hell you’d get in” land.

ok shoebox, be nice and mislead people, tell people they can get in with their sub-par GPA as a spring transfer student, lolz. Not everyone is an engineer, for most people, a 3.2 wouldn’t cut it, simple as that.

I didn’t say they would get in. I said it doesn’t hurt to apply, and applying twice is better than once. You, nor they, nor anyone else would ever know if they could get in with a 3.2 or 4.0.

Drama, drama, drama… to be honest a GPA below 3.5 is not competitive enough to transfer to UVA.

lol, us UVA students~

and Barboza–ditto
