I want to apply to transfer to Columbia next year (I'm a freshman right now). How high should my GPA be? Do they really weigh your high school transcript that much? My senior year grades dipped a lot. How about the SAT? I would think that college performance matters a lot more than what I did in high school.

I can’t answer your question because I know nothing about transfer admissions, but out of curiosity, what makes you want to transfer? I’m wondering because I’m currently deciding between Columbia and Penn.

As a transfer, your college grades, professor recommendations and transfer essay count more than your HS grades and SAT scores. The number of transfers per year is pretty low, so you’re going to need a high GPA no matter where you come from.

I know of a couple of people who transferred from Penn and I think that you should have a good chance, assuming your senior grades weren’t horrible and your freshman grades are incredible. Since you got into Penn, I suppose your SAT scores are in the ballpark for Columbia.

Good luck!
