I am a freshman at RPI hoping to transfer to Cornell school of Engineering for fall 2005. I am involved with a profesional organization where we are working on a design competition to build a model airplane which requires very professional methods, it is essentially a student run research project. I have started my own organization devoted to the discussion of various ideas and beliefs. I am working on getting involved with a research project and will be doing some community service in december and the second semester. My GPA for the first semester should be around a 3.3-3.5 and I am taking 17 credit hours. Recommendations I will be working on getting to know my proffessors more and hopefully recommendations will be good and essays shoudl be good. Could anyone who knows RPI or Cornell please tell me if I am on the right track and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also my High school record isnt too wonderful which is why I am transfering, my SATs are both 600 which i am not proud of at all and I understand that Cornell doesnt look to much at SATs or even High school record as much as they do my new GPA. So other things I have heard include "RPI is a feeder to Cornell" I hope that helps and They really look hard upon the class at RPI called IEA aslos known as Statics. which I plan to have at the very least a B and a good rec from the professor.

Come on, please, I really need some advice.

hey there, i plan to transfer to cornell engineering too
it seems like the new cc forum doesn't have as much warm-hearted ppl as the old one any more
but if i remember correctly, there is a post about transfering from rpi to cornell in the old cc, you may want to read that.
Also IMO, GPA may be the most important factor of all in transfer admissions, so I'll definitely try to keep that as high as possible.
I'm also taking any suggestions as well

CNCL, Ive been checking CC like 8 times a day for replys, thanks! What I have heard is that Cornell doesnt really care about SATs and Past performance nearly as much as your current GPA, so I think as long as I have a GPA around 3.5 I should be in the game. AlsoIn terms of ec's I plan on doing some community service over the next couple months and second semester, I talked to my statics professor about getting into a research project and he told me that all I have to do is ask, and as easy as that sounds, I have asked a number of them and I havent had any luck yet. So I will work on that for the second semester but I am in the design, build fly competition so that should keep me busy and look pretty good as well. I recommend trying to start your own club its not as difficult as it sounds, and Cornell likes to see that sort of attitude also I am hoping they recognize and like the type of club I chose to start. but Im not tpp worried about that, Im just worried about being up to par with the other applicants so i can at least have a shot. plus I heard if you applied the year before it will help since the see your determined. I am definately dtermined, If not next year then I will make one more attempt, before holding off till graduate school. I appreciate your reply please write more, also anything else youve heard about the process might be helpful.

Hey, nice to see you replying so promptly.
From what I've heard, yea college GPA tops anything else in the process. HOWEVER, recently cornell engineering just updated their web page (it was nice looking and very corherent to the cornell homepage), and I've noticed a few changes from the previous page. For instance, under Transfer Applicants FAQ section, instead of saying SATs aren't required previously, they've changed it to not required but "highly encourage[ed]", I don't know if the SATs are placed a higher priority now. I'm an international in u.s., and i'm kind of embarrassed of my sats :( (bad high school counseling too, never heard of SAT till summer before senior year), so i don't know if I should try it again? I'm determined as well.
I'm a freshman, and will be applying for sophomore standing, I assume you are too? Oh btw, do you know if we can send app online or do we have to do it using paper app?

Yes I am a freshman, and from what I have heard the SATs are still not too hefty a part but I could be wrong, It wouldnt make sense for them to count it since it is supposed to measure how well you can handle the first year in college. I too am very embarassed but I dont think they pay too much attention to them. So I wouldnt suggest taking them over.

ok, what about the online app? do you know if we could only send it via snail mail? Since I had no luck finding a link to a online version on their webpage?
Thanks

There are no online apps for transfer. Even though somewhere on the Cornell app says they do, they actually don't.

The online apps are for first year applicants for some reason. But I think we stll need some advise on what we need to do to have a better chance in accpetance so lets not loose track of this objective.Im not sure which essay to write, do you think they give preference to a certain queston being chosen? like do you think they look down at you if you choose to ask and answer your own question cause it loooks like your taking the easy way out by avoiding their questions? Im not sure what to do.

I've been busy for this couple days, sorry i haven't been able to get back to you.
I honestly haven't thought about it yet, but i see the essay as something to explain yourself where you wouldn't be able to in any previous part of the application. so it really varies from person to person. which one do you think you will write about

Hey thats no problem. I've been thinking about using the "ask your own question" essay, Im not sure what Im going to ask though.

Did you already send in part 1?

no I'm gonna wait until december, should i send it in earlier?

that's what i'm thinking too, probably right before winter break. December seems pretty good, it's after freshman ea admits and spring transfer admits, so that may give us the most advantage if any.
Have you requested your hs transcript? Do you have any other colleges in mind?

well in terms of applications materials everything will be done over the winter break, includeing my high school stuff, which i will either have my parents take care of or I will send my old guidance counseloran email. I was also considering applying to University of Michigan Ann Arbor, and Carnegie mellon. Also just recently I have begun to consider joining the Air Force ROTC do you think that may help in anyway, if I was in the ROTC or apply for it?

I have absolutely no knowledge of any kind related to ROTC since i'm not even in the domestic pile. But i really doubt that will give you any advantage in gaining admission though. What major do you plan to apply for?

I want to apply for Aerospace Engineering, I just really hope they dont care about SAT scores which I think Im not going to send them.

In any case my situation can only be worse, my hs includes sat scores as part of the transcript... so i've no other choice lol

Can I ask why your transferring from RPI to Cornell other than the fact taht Cornell is an Ivy? I applied ED to RPI..just wondering...Btw to transfer don't you need to have completed sophomore year in college, because most schools won't accept crredits until soph yr? or am i under teh wrong impression. Some info for you..
