Hi all, I am thinking of transfering from UChicago to Northwestern because of the film program, but I'm nervous about my chances because UChicago is ridiculously hard with their grading on papers and homework and such, and especially in our math classes. We've had points taken off of correct answers for some reason unknown to us except to say that we didn't write exactly what the grader wanted word-for-word, even though according to our instructors it was correct. So I am visibly annoyed about this. I love UChicago but I don't much care for the classes, which is what college is supposed to be about. Yet I am more interested in the social aspects of the college and the friends and the architecture and the fun I'm having. And I'm forgetting that UChicago doesn't have a good film program at all and that is what I want to do with my life - go into film in some way.

So, I had a 27 on my ACT, I had a 4.0 in high school, I don't know what I have now but I can guarantee that it's not a 4.0 and that my Statistics grade will not be good because again, the grading is funky as I explained. I am doing decently with my Humanities and Social Sciences classes but the grades are still lower than I'm used to - everyone gets some version of a B and RARELY an A. I have been active a little by taking part in DocFilms the student-run movie theater; I am my house's Movie Czar as in I'm in charge of presenting movies on Thursday and Sunday nights, or any other time. I plan on playing softball in a club sport in the spring. I have other interests that I would get involved with at NU that aren't available here, namely writing. There's not a lot of urgency for creativity here even though everyone can be creative. There's just no focus on it from the school. I want that.

My question is, should I bother applying or will I have a decent shot at getting into the Comm. School?

Thanks!

northwestern admissions is very familiar with the grading process at uchicago, students from uchicago each year are admitted as transfers.

don't expect northwestern to be all that much easier though, the grading is, from what i've heard, equally if not more so arbitrary

honestly, in my opinion, this school is EASY!!!! This place is comparable to Cornell, but i think even easier.

hopefully, i'll be out of here by next yr to Stanford or Columbia.

peace!

i had heard it wasn't that hard before i got here, but i think there is alot of grade deflation and a certain amount of arbitrariness to the grades, i feel like i operate within the B range in every class.

well, i cant speak for everyone, but i am running an A or A- in every class i am taking, and everyone of them is a 200 or 300 level class and i am a sophmore, i even pulled triple digits on one midterm.....its the kind of place, u get the grade u want if you do the work

i havent seen one class yet that has tried to undercut its students

let me know what classes you are taking please... seriously

you must just work really hard then, the people i know getting As put in 4+ hours a day of homework, which doesn't sound like alot but if you think about putting in 4 real hours every day outside of class that is alot of work

i'm a mediocre student (as far as northwestern goes), i got straight As at my last school, i put in a fair amount of work here and i can usually expect to get a low B, a higher B if i work harder and am more confident about what i'm doing but there is a LOT of material you are expected to know to receive an A.

Seriously though, what classes are you taking?

Also, what about financial aid? My EFC is low enough that UChicago is giving me huge gift aid in the form of $30,000 a year in university grant money. Can I expect NU to at least come close to that, given my financial situation? Thanks.

:: i havent seen one class yet that has tried to undercut its students::

heh, have you taken orgo or bio yet?
