Transfer from UGA to Tech???

After high school, I applied Early Action to both UGA & Tech, but was denied from Tech. I have been at UGA for the past year as a Freshman. I changed my major from political science, to journalism, and now MARKETING. I am hoping and praying that I am able to transfer to Georgia Tech to study this under Business Administration/Marketing. I am already enrolled in UGA for the 2015-2016 year, but I was wondering which classes to take and which ones will even transfer. I have looked at the UGA/Tech transfer equivalency charts and I somewhat understand but fear I’ve misinterpreted it.

My current cumulative/overall GPA is 3.42.

After high school I took 7 AP courses:
European History - 5
U.S. History - 4
Literature & Composition - 4
English Language - 4
U.S. Government & Politics - 3
Biology - 3
Psychology - 4

Unfortunately, I have been taking mostly humanities and/or credits that absolutely will not transfer. I am trying to catch up so that I will be able to attend Tech by the 2016-2017 school year ( I know, I need 60 to apply for transfer. Are only transferrable credits counted in the 60, or just 60 credits according to any university?).

Here is a list of classes I have taken at UGA in the past year:
Fall 2014: SOCI 2470, STAT 2000, GEOG 1101, CLAS 1000
Spring 2015: FREN 1001, SPAN 1110, UNIV 1108 (in prep for Math 1101), GEOG 1112

** (I know, taking two languages was stupid.) **

Here is my current schedule of UGA credits/classes for Fall 2015 & my intended Spring 2016 schedule:
Fall 2015: ENGL 1103, MATH 1113, SPAN 2001, GEOG 1122 & 1122L
Spring 2016: MATH 2110 or 2200, BIOL, ECON 2105, & something else.

I am not necessarily a math person - which seems dumb since I want to go to Tech, I know. But I really, really want this. It’s not like I’m going to be an Applied Math major. I just really need this, and I was wondering if anyone else has done this. I am willing to work hard as hell. Sooooo… is it possible for me to be admitted as a transfer? :?

THANK YOU SO MUCH,

D. B.

I would suggest that you first take a closer look at the transfer requirements, as your post does not show a very strong understanding of Tech’s minimum requirements. http://www.admission.gatech.edu/apply/transfer/transfer-selection-process

You do not need 60 credits to transfer. You only need 30. However, to transfer into the Business Administration major, you will need to have taken the UGA equivalent of the following Georgia Tech courses: English I, English II, Calculus I, Calculus II, and two science classes with a lab component. All of these must be completed by the document deadline for the semester you wish to transfer in for.

Your listed schedule does not meet the basic requirements for transfer. Namely, your currently listed math classes will not be sufficient. You must complete the equivalent of Calculus I & Calculus II before you can transfer. Math 2200 will count for Calculus I, but MATH 1113 and 2110 will not count towards the math requirements. You can look up transfer equivalencies here: https://oscar.gatech.edu/pls/bprod/wwsktrna.P_find_location Based on the fact that you took a remedial math class last year and will be taking pre-calculus in the fall, it sounds like meeting the math requirements may be your biggest challenge. You need to focus on these courses and do well in them. Anything less than a B will probably hurt your application, and you should aim for As. It doesn’t matter that you’re not going to be an applied math major. Tech cares about your quantitative ability, your potential future classmates will have a reasonably solid math background, and despite popular belief among some engineering majors, the business program at Tech does require you to be good at mathematical analysis.

You also need to ensure you take two lab sciences. I see geology with a lab, and biology listed on you schedule. You will need to make sure that geology will transfer and be sure to take a biology class that also has a lab component.

The average transfer GPA is also a 3.7, which is markedly higher than your current GPA of 3.42, so you need to focus on doing very well next year.

Forgive me for being blunt, but you appear to need some honest feedback. Please do your research before posting on a forum asking people to take time to help you. Your post showed me that you have not spent even 30 minutes looking into Tech’s transfer process and requirements. You are not currently in a good position to transfer and you need to adjust your planned schedule and academic performance if you want to have a successful application. You note that you are willing to work “hard as hell.” Do that.

You also say that you “need this.” Why? Georgia Tech has a strong business program, and there are certainly some job opportunities available to Scheller grads that may not be as available to Terry grads, but UGA also has a solid business school, and it sounds like you are already studying marketing there, so why do you “need” to transfer? What goals do you have that Georgia Tech is uniquely suited to help you accomplish? If you do not have a strong answer to these questions, you may not need to transfer at all.

I am very grateful for your help. I did look into this for about 2 hours, most time of which was spent rearranging my schedule according to what will transfer… The only thing I got wrong was the amount of hours 60/30. I am aware that Math 1113 doesn’t transfer, but it is a UGA prerequisite for Calc, which I will need to take at my current school before I apply.

The reason I “need” this is because I am extremely unhappy in Athens. To me, it is a drunk farmtown with a small percentage of people who are dedicated to studying. I also was deserted by several of my friends and so many people who I love currently live and study in Atlanta. I have wanted to go to GT since I applied, and I would have gone if I had been accepted. Atlanta inspires me and makes me excited to be alive & I am ready to be surrounded by people with better study ethics and ultimately brighter futures.

There are also innumerable internship opportunities during the school year in Atlanta - I’ll be able to study and work in a great business hub of a city (unlike Athens, which is LITERALLY in the middle of nowhere, my internships will be forced to take place in the summer with a commute which sucks).

Honestly, the prospect of potentially transferring is the only thing I have to look forward to. I am ready to take my education more seriously and be surrounded by people with the same motivations.

Thanks x
