Transfer from WashU to Northwestern

I am currently a freshman at WashU and not really satisfied there. I realized that Northwestern was a far better choice for me when I visited friends at Northwestern. The atmosphere at WashU does not fit me at all and many things just do not fit me. I am involved in many ways but still feel there's a lot lacking and that I will have more opportunities at Northwestern. I did not get in RD last year (I should have applied ED) and am looking for a second chance at the school. My high school GPA was a 3.5 and I graduated cum laude. My freshman first semester GPA is a 3.3 (17 credits courseload, all pre-med and electives). My SATs were pretty high, 2250/2400 (720, 740,720) and I took a lot of AP courses and I have a lot of ECs and a strong hook.

Am I off by a long shot to Northwestern due to my grades? I am really looking to go there and it was my first choice as a high school senior.

I feel like my essay last year said I liked NU only because of the HPME program(I didn't get in). This year, I detailed my essay more on things I liked about the school: The radio station, the newspaper, ECs I want to be involved in...etc.

Also, I got NO MONEY from WashU...so I'm hoping I can get finaid from NU, somehow Crosses fingers. How about scholarships and finaid from NU? I read their graduates owe only 17,000 on average. In my current situation, I owe over 30,000 for ONE YEAR.

in this economy getting fin aid for a transfer is going to be very, very hard

your gpa is low, do you have leadership positions in your ec's? it may be worth applying, but i really dont think you should get your hopes up

I mean, I can afford it I think...but i'm looking more at schloarships.

I do have many leadership activities. Involved in leadership at WashU and all throughout HS and many strong ECs and a hook. I read that they only consider your app after second semester. This semester I'm taking 17 again but I have an easier courseload so I am certain I will be able to pull at least a 3.8. Will that help? I'll have like a 3.5-3.6? I don't know but I really want to switch to NU. I'm going for a campus visit in 2 weeks as well.

when are you applying? if you are applying to enroll for this fall, they will not see your grades this semester unless, in the fairly rare case, you are right on the border they may ask to see your midterm grades, but this is far from the norm

umm, having a higher gpa will obviously "help" your chances, im really not sure what the point of unclarity is? i don't see how you can be "certain" however that you can get a 3.8 next semester, everybody on here says they are going to get a 3.8-4.0 next semester if their gpa is lower than they wanted, but usually past performance is the best indicator of future performance....

Well I'm taking bio classes this semester and I made A's in my bio classes last semester and spring semester chem at wustl is a joke (fall semester was pure murder). So yeah, past performance proved that although chem isn't my forte, bio is. And I'm taking a philosophy class pass fail, dance, and chem. So, in best cirumstances, things will work out :/

If I decided to apply for the winter quarter, how would that work out? Do I pretty much up and leave WashU and my mid term grades = my quarter grades at Northwestern?

Does NU even look at hooks? Or essays? Even SATs? I'm pretty sure I was turned down senior year because of grades :/

again, northwestern apps arent due until may 1st. And they say explicitly that they wait to see second semester grades before reviewing application and making a decision

i would severely doubt you would receive any credit for any unfinished work at your former school.

taking four classes, one of which your taking p/f, one of which is a dance course, probably will not be considered a very rigorous courseload. what is your major?

Of course I'm going to finish all classes. I'm not withdrawing or anything. That would be ridiculous. And of course if all else fails, it's back to WashU next year for me.

My major is Biology...which is my forte :) Philosophy is pass fail. Chemistry is 2 classes, lab is separate from lecture. 2 bio classes. Dance.

if you transfer in the middle of the semester of wash u to nwestern, your courses will be unfinished, like i said

just fyi, Northwestern's website states that generally Transfer students do not get financial aid during their first year.

I think you'd be competitive if you get your GPA up to 3.5 and make clear why you really want to go to NU. Just curious, what differences do you see between the two? I actually had to choose between them as a transfer and had a difficult time but ultimately chose NU because it's closer to home, gave me better financial aid (the statement on the website that transfer students don't get financial aid during their first year was not true in my case, but I think the statement is just outdated), had stronger academics in my fields of study and is more prestigious.

Also, dufflebagjesus, could you tell us more about your experience with transfer admissions?

what do you want to know?

2250/2400 (720, 740,720)

720 + 720 + 740 = 2250?
