Transfer from Wesleyan

Hi, I'm currently a freshman at Wesleyan University. Though I like wes so far,
I'm already sick of Middletown and school's severe discrimination of the "early birds." So, I'm thinking about transferring outta here. Here are my stats:

School: Wesleyan
Race/Nationality: Asian/ International
College GPA:3.25(1st semester of college - pretty bad, considering wes is not too hardcore... also, ironically I got an A for a 200-level course(math) but got B's for other 100-level courses...)
Intended major: Math/ Social science areas
HS GPA: 3.75 (from one of the new england prep schools)
SAT's 650w/590v/6800m
ACT: 32
HS EC's: some kind of a spiritual journey for 4 years- wandering around the world like siddharta, living and meditating in a mountain for about half a month, sleeping in the streets with homeless people, etc, etc...
AP Scholar
can't remember anything else

schools looking at( in a random order):
Cornell (ILR)
Vassar
NYU (Arts&Sci)
Amherst
Middlebury
Brown
Denison
Reed
Claremont Mckenna
Johns Hopkins

Am I...if I raise my GPA by stop smoking pot so stop killing my brain cells and work hard in the 2nd semester, in the ballpark fior any of these schools?

"school's severe discrimination of the 'early birds.' "

Who are the early birds?

Possibly Reed or Denison. You have to realize that you were probably lucky to get into Wesleyan in the first place. I'm sorry that things did not work. But, Reed? Denison? Middlebury? You're going from the frying pan into the fire, IMHO.

I transfered last year out of Wesleyan to Northwestern and it was really a great move for me. I know what it's like to not feel comfortable on Wes campus and if you're already restless it can't hurt to send some applications out. However, I had higher gpa and sats (although pretty week ec's) and got mostly rejections. I purposely didn't look at other similarly- or higher-ranked LACs because especially those like Amherst and Middlebury or even Vassar would really be looking for some outstanding accomplishments in academics and/or extracurriculars, especially since they admit so few transfers. Also, you might feel comfortable in a school that has a larger transfer group (or student body altogether), which makes it easier to find your place. I don't know enough to rate your chances but your gpa can hurt you and some schools don't wait to get your spring grades. It also really helps to solidify your reasons for wanting to leave and get strong recs that show how you could benefit a new school.

for Cornell ILR the bare minimum to be looked at is a B+ average (3.3) while those who get in generally have around a 3.5. Work hard for another semester, get a 4.0, and see what you can do for transfering.

My hunch is if she works that hard second semester, she won't need to transfer. ;)

Yeah, that couldn't hurt.

On a more serious note, your SAT score might be a touch on the low side, and I'm almost positive I read somewhere that Middlebury admits very, very few transfer students. But I think if you work hard and get a 4.0 next semester, you'd be a much stronger candidate for some of the other schools on your list.

Thx guys...I guess I have to work my ass off this semester and look at schools like Reed, NYU, Claremont McKenna....probably U Chicago, too.

Heh. Middlebury is like <1%. I **** you not. Don't bother because you're wasting money. I believe they took 1 out of 200+ applicants.

You say Wes isn't that hardcore, but you got a 3.25. If that was the result of a bad environment for you, that's one thing. But why is it a bad environment? Realize that Reed College is just as liberal as Wesleyan, and most would agree that it is moreso. Reed is also considered one of the hardest schools around, so if that 3.25 was with you really working hard, you'll probably be looking at <3.0 GPA at Reed.

CMC would be a good place to apply. NYU as well, though even coming from Wes, a 3.25 could keep you out since they like to see a 3.6ish GPA.

UChi is kinda like Reed...you really want an academic environment it seems, but I'm wondering if schools will be worried as to whether you could handle it. Just bein honest.

Brand182, I say Wes isn't that hardcore because I got a 3.25...honestly I did study like three hours per week or so. Plus I skipped lots, lots of classes....(for two of my classes I only went to class three times- first day of class+ two for exams)... well, I guess even if I work hard maybe I will not get a wicked good GPA,. Maybe you are right and I will flunk out if I transfer to Reed or U chi. However, I still prefer to live with nerds or even GPA grubbers rather than cocky, pretentious "so-called" artists who are prevalent in wes.
(I don't mean most of weskids are pretentious...most of them are really nice, but I think there are more cocky artist population in wes than other schools. Again, this is just my opinion, though.)

Well I'm glad to hear you don't think it's that extremely difficult because I really want to transfer there.

Good luck with your apps. It will be tough, and I dunno how bad you dislike Wes, but I think you should find a safety if you REALLY want out. If not, your choices are all pretty reasonable (except Midd, which is just insane) and you should give it a shot.

good luck! i transferred this year to vassar, so let me know if you have any questions... they do accept very few transfers, however. but feel free to PM me!

best of luck in your transfer quest!

I'm not arguing with you. I'm just saying that whatever small college you choose is going to be a huge roll of the dice pretension-wise. Cocky artists vs. pretentious ski jockeys (Middlebury)? Cocky artists vs. pretentious preppies? (Amherst) All tough calls. It sounds like you really need to look at bigger universities. I have some other advice, too (but, you should prolly PM me for that.)

idea...

i'll trade you spots.

i'm sure we can work it out.
