Transfer from WVU to UVA or VA Tech?

Hey guys,

What kind of shot do you think I have of transferring to UVA or VA Tech in the fall? I’m currently a sophomore at WVU by credits, but a freshman by year. Here are my stats and stuff:

-I enrolled in a summer program before my first semester, I took two classes worth 7 credits and got A’s in both of them.

-My first semester I took 19 credits, including a “teaching practicum” class where I just TA’d another class, which was worth 3 credits. I got a semester GPA of 2.7, but that’s due to one Calculus class which was completely revamped this semester and honestly, a bunch of BS. The beginning of the semester we started with 30 people. Halfway through, 18 had dropped. Of the 12 left, three people passed the class. My other classes were two A’s, two B’s and a C+. I will be retaking the Calculus class next semester, and my failing grade will be dropped from my transcript. If I get an A in it, I’ll have a 3.5 for that semester.

-My current cumulative GPA is a 3.1, after next semester I expect to have between a 3.5 and a 3.7.

-I scored 2140 on my SAT, 34 on my ACT.

-I’m originally from Virginia, so I’ll be a student transferring from an out-of-state school back to in-state.

-I’m a Finance and Chinese Studies major, though I plan on changing that to a double major in Finance and Accounting with a minor in Chinese Studies. Surprisingly, this means I would have to take less classes and do less work due to the number of courses which overlap in Finance and Accounting.

-I played on the Men’s Rugby team at WVU.

-I’m a member of the Chinese club at WVU.

-I’m studying abroad in Beijing from May 15th to June 15th in 2016, taking some cultural and language classes for my Chinese Studies major/minor.

-I’ve held a job helping out with a small marketing, SEO, and business consultation firm for the last two years. Duties included building spreadsheets, data entry, etc. Stuff most people do in entry-level business jobs.

-I have a guaranteed letter of recommendation from the instructor of the class I TA’d for.

Thanks!

Hello. You have some impressive credentials. I went to WVU. You need to double check on the grade replacement issue. As I understand it, you may be able to repeat the class and WVU will no longer calculate it in your overall GPA. However, I don’t believe the Higher Education Commission (Midwestern Schools), which accredits WVU, allows grades to be “erased” from your transcript. In other words, all attempts shall be shown on your WVU transcript. It is up to the school to which you transfer, to decide whether or not they will recalculate your GPA, to include BOTH attempts or not. And of course, you will only receive credit for the passed class, if it is transferrable - again, up to the host University. Also, some schools require that you must have earned a certain number of credit hours, or you will need to present your HS transcript as well.

Flagship schools that I KNOW that you can get into:
University of Alabama, as they will accept your GPA from WVU as stated on the WVU transcript. Repeated classes will NOT be recalculated - many departments at UA are unaware of this and will give you misinformation! Call the registrar’s office DIRECTLY and ask; University of SC; Ole Miss and LSU (hands down); Arkansas; Kentucky and UTenn,(which I would not recommend, as TN OOS tuition is outrageous and not worth the money difference). Of these, I would choose UA, as it is making a HUGE grab for the best students in the south, by providing merit scholarships. A lot of UNC rejects seem to be going there now.

BTW, I am hearing that there is a BIG increase of NC students attending WVU these days. Kids that are frozen out of Carolina and NC State would now rather attend a Flagship like WVU, than a regional in-state like ASU/ECU. True?
