Transfer from Yale to a More Technical School

Hi. Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

I chose Yale University intending to double major in a science/math and a humanities, but at some point since I chose to attend the school, my interests have changed and I am incredibly passionate about pursuing Electrical Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Yale's Engineering program is not as strong, nor as large, as other engineering programs at schools such as Stanford, MIT, and CMU. As much as I love Yale for it's intellectual diversity, architecture, and beautiful campus, I would like to be in an environment surrounded by very nerdy and "techy" students who share if not the same, similar interests in engineering. My question is, should I transfer to a school with a stronger engineering department, albeit one that is possibly less nationally prestigious? I'm currently looking into Carnegie Mellon's ECE department and the school also offers a double major program in HCI. Would it be stupid or not worth it to give up a Yale education for a CMU one (or MIT, Stanford, etc)? Am I simply being too idealistic and is every undergraduate school's engineering program give or take the same?

What are your thoughts on Yale Engineering and whether or not I should transfer? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

You just started and you want to transfer already? Does nt engineering start after 2 years?

Are nt you better off in a school which claims to have a 1:1 student ratio in engineering compared to some of these other schools you name? That should give you a lot of attention and research opportunities.

We had a tour guide last year who started as a mech E, changed majors after 1 year, completed a BS/MS in 3 years and was headed to Columbia for md/ph.d.

Once you start taking classes your interests can can change.

Although Yale’s engineering program may not be as strong as the other schools you listed above, I think that you will still be offered the same opportunities, since Yale attracts many top recruiters. A degree from Yale is just as good as a degree from Stanford, MIT, CMU, even though their programs are stronger.

Stay put at Yale and get your degree from Yale, you won’t be disappointed!

I see your point, but the issue is that this school lacks the “techy” “nerdy” atmosphere that I love. I don’t think my interests and passions can flourish in a school that is so humanities focused and engineer-lacking.

Are nt there 100 engineering students? Where else did you get in?

You make a good point. Even though you’re applying from an ivy league, admissions to MIT and Stanford is going to be slim to none, just because of their transfer admission policies and rates. Your best bet is CMU, best of luck

This is as much an engineering question than a transfer one, you might also want to try the Engineering major forum.

yales a great school… who cares just do engineering there unless ur really miserable… i think it would be insane to go to cmu… how much “better” do u think it is there… do well and have fun time at yale, then if u want u could go to great grad engineering program… seriously, who cares about the teche kids at other schools, u want yale on ur resume, thats why u stay
