I looked at my student center… And my class history has been imported from my CC and I completed IGETC there, shouldn’t that mean I don’t need to do anymore GE’s at CPP? Because CPP is showing that I need ~5 more GE classes to graduate. It’s a bit confusing; soooo if anyone has been in a similar situation, do share your wisdom.

Annnnd also, I cancelled my IGETC certification order so I can get the transcript order on time for orientation/deadline (since my cc won’t send it out until the 2nd week of July, which poses a risk). Should I go back and order a separate IGETC or will the school clear everything out?

Thanks!

Edit: This is different than the other 2 GE threads because it mostly pertains to ordering it with transcripts but yeahhhhhhhhh

Edit 2: And since CPP said IGETC is not required, what gives?

have you matched up what courses you’ve taken against the required curriculum to graduate? Also, just because you’ve completed your lower division GEs doesn’t mean you’re done with them. You still have to complete 3 upper division GEs to graduate.

I have for IGETC and completed that. As for CPP’s curriculum, I haven’t taken a foreign language (HS foreign langage should’ve covered for IGETC) and a social science/antro class yet.

Since I know you’re applying as a CIS major, could it be that you need to take the GE courses that line up with that curriculum for the major? IGETC doesn’t really mean anything… And CPP doesn’t require a foreign language. There are many other classes you can take to fulfill that requirement (ie: literature).

Look under your degree progress report and compare it to this: https://www.csupomona.edu/~academic-affairs/programs/academic-advising/tools/sheets-roadmaps/2014-2015/curriculum-sheets/bus/BUS_CIS_2014_Final_ALY_rev062414.pdf

If you see any discrepancies, contact one of the advisers. Stella or Pam will be more than happy to help you out. You can email them and they’ll take a look at it.

Thank you, @tehjoadsta. I looked up the GE course for CPP and for the upper division, there’s nothing for CIS (closest is one of the CS courses). I was hoping that IGETC would cover the foreign language/lit part because they would’ve accept my HS foreign language years- but from what you said, CPP would disregard IGETC and still make you take it? Other than the PDF you listed, it seems like the foreign lan/lit would be an issue. From what I’ve seen in the forums, graduating within 2 years seems doable

you HAVE to take the 3 upper division courses at CPP to graduate. They are the “synthesis” courses in sections B, C, and D. They are going to be level 300 or above courses and they are NOT offered at a CC. So that will cover 3 GE courses you are wondering about. IGETC does not necessarily cover the foreign language requirement either. Also, generally speaking, after taking courses at a junior college, all coursework you took at a high school becomes irrelevant. But if IGETC covered that requirement and you have paperwork to back it up, then get it and have an adviser mark it completed.

Graduating in 2 years as a transfer is completely doable. You’d have to take 4 courses a quarter for most terms to do it. Just spread things out since not all classes are offered every quarter (namely the CIS electives). Honestly, its even possible to get done in under 2 years if you do summer school.

Use assist.org: <a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST;
On the first page, select the community college you attend(ed) and then on the second page select Cal Poly Pomona (top of the list), then select your major (I believe you said it was CIS, me too!). Then on the right side of the list are the classes you have to take before you can go to Cal Poly Pomona. Some of these classes may have prerequisites or co-requisites, based on your Community College, so make sure about those “hidden” classes too. The classes on the left side of the list are the ones you will take while at CPP to get your degree, and again, there may be pre/co-requisites once you get there. Dont forget you also have to satisfy the IGETC requirements too… your CC should have given you a sheet listing all the classes available and what you need to take for the IGETC… my CC did anyways and its super helpful… I dont know if the IGETC is the same for every CC, but if it is, I can upload a scanned image of it for you to check if you took all the classes needed.

Worst comes to worst, just call or make an appointment with your CC’s transfer department or a counselor and talk about the problem to figure out what’s happening and what to do about it. You can do the same with CPP.

I am in the same position. My degree progress report says I have to take almost 8 GE classes (excluding my synthesis classes). ■■■■. I did not get transfer certified. I dont know if this means IGETC or CSU GE-Breadth certified.
My biggest question is this: Will cal poly most exempt me from taking a lot these GE’s (I realize not all) if I call my CC and get GE certified. Thanks.

@samthesham Are all of your courses accounted for in your transfer report? Did you make sure that all classes you took at your CC were transferable? Did you use assist.org and take a look to see if it fulfilled a requirement at CPP?

I keep saying this to everyone on here, but make sure to take a copy of your unofficial transcripts to your orientation. An adviser can help look over what you’ve completed and can mark items completed for you.

@tehjoadsta Yes all my courses were transferred and many of them do not satisfy what CPP wants like.
I completed the CSU GE-breadth plan at my CC before I transferred but I didn’t get certified before I transferred. All my courses have transferred over and many of my classes by themselves do not satisfy CPP requirements. For example, at saddleback college Introduction to Horticulture satisfies the biological science class as required by the saddleback college CSU GE-Breadth agreement. Same with speech requirement: I took interpersonal communication which satisfies the agreement between saddleback and the CSU system but not so with CPP specifically. I must take Public Speaking or Argument/Advocacy. CPP has an agreement that if an incoming student is GE certified (called so by the lady at my orientation) then CPP could not force that student to take more GE classes that would exceed some number of units. I forgot what is was specifically.

After transferring I did look at assist.org and no, many of my GE classes taken at my CC do not satisfy the requirement at CPP. Thats why Id like to get that GE certification. Because I think that exempts me from taking a number of basic lower division GE classes over again.

@samthesham you might be best off getting that paperwork from your CC. assist.org does say that you satisfied your requirements, but CPP fails to recognize that fact. I’m pretty sure CPP just runs their transcripts through the computer and matches them accordingly.
