Hey is there a big difference between getting a 3.93 and 3.83 gpa in your first semester of college for a transfer student... like will that significantly hurt my chances in any way if my other stats are pretty solid.. im applying to all top 15 schools including 3 ivys

Of course a 3.93 is much more impressive. But the admissions officers look at more than just your GPA - your SATs, EC’s (in both HS and C), reasons for wanting to transfer, personal essays, and letters of recommendation all factor in. You should be fine, 3.83 for first semester college is impressive nonetheless

anyone else have any other ideas?

I guess it would depend how competitive the program you were trying to get into was or the school. Most places it probably wouldn’t make a big difference no, but at a highly competitive school I guess it could.

By no means is what I just stated fact, because I have no information one way or the other. I am just guessing.

One is higher than the other, but they are both excellent

I would like to hope that anything above a 3.7 that isn’t a 4.0 is in the same league. I mean, I have a 3.78, and that’s not as impressive as a 3.93, but I hope that it does convey a particular caliber of student.

It really depends on the university. If you’re shooting for Yale, Stanford, etc… I think a 3.9 is a big difference from a 3.7 (and a 3.8 for that matter). If you’re going for a less competitive school, I don’t think it will matter that much.

I wonder, do the grades underlying the GPA affect how candidates are evaluated?

In other words, would a 3.75 composed of A, A-, A-, A- be different from a 3.75 composed of A, A, A, B?

^ thats a very very good question.

i’m in fact curious to see what the answer in that is. i know admissions look for upward trends, so maybe they do in fact look for A, A-,A-,A- vs. a A, A,A,B

i think i’d rather have straight A-'s than a B to throw off the look :P

I have a 3.94 at Georgetown but I’m still really shaky about admissions at top schools. Crapshoot. Good luck, everyone.

i have a 3.83 with two A’s and two A- and am applying to columbia, dartmouth, penn and johns hopkins… so does the difference hurt me a lot with these schools
