Transfer help? Please?

I never took high school seriously, I was School President (2000 kids) School Treasurer, Class President, and Class Treasurer. I was speech and debate captain for a time (two years, and was in the club for a year before that) I was on a board with the superintendent for three years (a counsel that essentially help the school board measure school climate and to give student input on a district level) I was on all sorts of academic teams (brain bowl and academic challenge, we did pretty well actually 3rd and 2nd places respectively). I took a number of AP classes and ended up with these scores AP Euro, US and US Gov: 4's and AP Lit and AP Comp: 3's.
I was a fairly prominent student in my community, I did multiple TV interviews for projects I worked on , some as long as 8 continuous minutes, I gave speeches at the local middle school on the importance of school involvement. But I let my grades slip I ended up with a 2.88 GPA and ended up having to go to a state school (the University of Oregon). Right now I'm set to get a 3.75 GPA or higher (4.0)for the first quarter of my Freshman year, I would really like to transfer to a more reputable institution (smaller class sizes and more prestige). SAT scores = 1770. I was wondering what the best course of action would be. Try to transfer immediately, finish the year here? What would be the pros and or cons of these choices? I have no idea what I'm doing and I'd love your help!

It will most probably be finish 2 years there if you want to transfer to a substantially better school. Until that point, high school grades and scores will count more than a few college quarters.

By transfer “immediately”, do you mean for spring term 2011? I don’t think that will be your best option. IMO, you should wait until March to apply for fall 2011 or until next March to apply for fall 2012. You will then have more terms of top grades to show that your academic achievement level has/is going to continue.

You could certainly apply now and if not successfull apply again… but that costs money and may also diminish your chances on the second try (no proof that the latter would happen, but I don’t particularly think it’s worth the risk).

Would it be a good idea to transfer to a slightly better school as soon as I can? (The University of Willamette said I a great shot at getting in as soon as spring term) Or is “school hopping” a bad strategy?
