Transfer Help Plz - SFSU to CC to UC?

Alright so I've created another thread to explain at greater depth my situation.

I completed 3 semesters at SJSU and decided to move back home. I took a semester off and started back up at a California Community College.

At SFSU I took 12 Units my first semester all covering my GE (COMM 150 - Fundamentals of Oral Communication (3 units, B+), ENG 114 - 1st Year Composition (3 units, B), PLSI 200 - American Politics (3 units, B+), Intro to Astronomy (3 Units, A-).

My second semester I took 15 units also covering my GE (BIOL 100 - Human Biology (3 Units, B-), ANTH 120 - Intro to Social+Cultural Anthropology (3 Units, A-), PHIL 101 - Intro to Philosophy (3 Units, B+), ANTH 110 - Intro to Archeology (3 Units, A), PHIL 110 - Critical Thinking I (3 Units, A).

For my third semester I took 15 units as well, also all GE (ENG 214 - 2nd Yr Written Composition-English (3 Units, B), OCN 104 - Oceanography Lec+Lab (4 Units, A), ARRS 221 - African American Music of the 20th Century (3 Units, B+), LABR 251 - Know Your Work Rights (3 Units, A-), HUM 225 - Values In American Life (3 Units, A-).

At SFSU I completed a total of 43 units and my overall GAP was 3.49 (according to my unofficial transcript)

On top of that I had taken AP Calc in High School and scored a 3 on the AB exam.

I am currently in Community College and taking 15 Units (Macroeconomics + Lab (4 Units), Microeconomics + Lab (4 Units), Applied Calculus, and Native American History); I expect to get an As in my Econ and Calc courses and pushing to get an A- in Native American history which is possible but depends on how I preform on the Final.

This will push my overall GPA a little bit, but when I tried the UC Berkeley calculator it was only somewhere in the 3.5s

Long story short, I'm in a rush to figure out my chances of getting into these UCs (UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, and maybe UC Santa Barbara).

What I don't know is wether I'll be seen as a SFSU or CC transfer student. I have a meeting with the advisor at my CC about this on Tuesday but its just been the only thing on my mind these past few days and would like some more immediate insight.

Is it possible for me to get into any of these schools? If not is it even worth trying with the $70 application fee? How important is extra curricular activities for a transfer student? I have none essentially. I have some anecdotal stuff which relates with my major and whatnot.

I'm sorry about the excruciating detail...

Typo - I went to SFSU not SJSU

In about 10 seconds you can use your favorite search engine to look up the definition of a community college transfer for the UCs.

You can go to the admission website of each campus you are considering and see how they evaluate transfers. Each campus gets to set its own policy, so you need to check them all.

This is an advice forum, so here’s some advice. There are some things that are a matter of opinion and experience; for example if a given UC takes ECs into account you might ask your counselor their opinion of your chances given what you have.

But there are lots of things that are black-and-white. The definition of a CC transfer. How many units you need to apply. The required classes to be accepted into your major. Etc. You can look them up on your own, and more importantly you are going to be held to them regardless of whether your counselor or someone here on the internet describes them to you correctly or not. Unfortunately some counselors are not very good, and there is no sign in the office telling you which kind you are talking to. Plenty of examples the past few weeks in this forum of kids that have gotten bad advice; one is the guy who was told he could take a year of physics at UCSD once accepted (at least according to his version of events) and now finds he is not eligible to apply as an engineer at any other UC. You can at least look up how many kids from your CC have gone to UC/CSU campuses at [California Postsecondary Education Commission – Transfer Pathways](http://www.cpec.ca.gov/OnLineData/TransferPathway.asp) – if your school is towards the bottom of the list you might be more leery of the xfer office advice.

You can do the groundwork now and when you meet Tue have some questions based on what you learn. Or you can expect your counselor to start at ground zero (eg. “who qualifies as a CC transfer?”) and spend the finite amount of time you have going over basics; then when questions occur to you (and assuming the counselor gave you the correct info) you can make another appt to get those answered.

Applying to transfer is a nerve-wracking process. Nobody enjoys it. But the more you take ownership of it, researching all you can, the more informed you’ll be and the better the chances for an outcome you want. You can rely, for example, on the counselor to notice you haven’t take a required course for your major; or you can look up the requirements yourself and not be reliant on someone else noticing. Sure in an ideal world you get a counselor who is completely informed and never overlooks anything; sadly, we don’t live in that world.

I take back a bit of the advice I just gave. Looking at your other post I saw this ^^^^^

Cancel your appt, get another counselor. This one is no good. For starters, she ought to know the deadline to submit a TAG was Sept 30th. If she doesn’t know something that basic, I would be worried just what she does know.

Second, there is a matrix online that lists the exact rules for submitting a TAG at each campus. You may have qualified at some but not others. As part of your self-empowerment I’m going to let you find it instead of giving you the link. If I can find it, and if you can find it, I’d be really concerned about a counselor that doesn’t seem to know about it or if she does did not give you a copy.

Is she a general counselor at your school, BTW, or one that specializes in xfers? Not that it really matters; you need to talk to someone else.

I think you need 30 credits at CC to be considered a CC transfer.

I don’t really have the luxury of time to cancel an appointment with this counselor (who is a transfer advisor at my CC). I have less than two weeks to complete my app and write my responses to the prompts.

I’m clearly very ill prepared, hence the desperation, but I only really considered the possibility of transferring to a UC only like 3-4 days ago after my admission to a CSU got pulled because of some minor detail I overlooked.

I looked online and it seems the conditions are two full terms at a CC and that it has to be the most recent institution you’ve gone to. I meet that so I will be recognized as a CC transfer.

I’ve met all of the minimum transfer requirements (both the units and the necessary courses) and the only thing I have to do now is sort out are which courses I will be taking next semester.

Anyways, thanks for the responses.
