I’m a freshman at a large, southern state university. Although I do like my school, I was thinking of transferring for a number of reasons.

I am currently an electrical engineering major but I am not really interested in it. I chose this major due to a combination of parental pressure and the supposedly limitless, lucrative job oppurtunities it offered (not sure how true that is, really). My first interest is English…and while my school has a good English department, I’m not sure that continuing to go to a school known more for its engineering, agriculture and business schools for a liberal arts degree is a good idea.

I’m not a fan of the huge state school atmosphere. I think state schools work better for students who are more mature and known what they want to do with their lives-I don’t, at least not yet. I still want to explore a lot of possibilites, which is something I can’t really do here.

I’ve lived in the same area for ten years and I’m kind of tired of it. I love the south and my hometown in particular but I want to try living somewhere else, a least for a while.

I want to play varsity sports. I have no chance of playing for a large Division I program (one of the best in the country, to boot) but I’m almost positive I could make the cross-country and track teams at a small Division III school.

Anyway, could you guys offer any advice? Should I transfer or is it too much of hassle? One thing that I would lose is a nice scholarship-as long as I stay here, my college is pretty much completely paid for. Not having any debt is something to think about.

Finally (thanks for staying with me this long), a few schools I was thinking of transferring to:

Kenyon
St. Olaf’s
Allegheny College
St. Mary’s College of Maryland

So, I was wondering if I have a chance for financial aid/scholarships at any of them (which I would need, really)

and my stats:

~3.46 college GPA (this first semester I screwed around too much)
In the college Honors Program
I’ve got a prof. who will write me a glowing recommendation
Member of the college’s cross-country club team
Founder/member/president of the college’s quiz bowl team
Volunteer for high school Science Olympiad competition held at the college

High school stats:
1460 SAT (800 V, 660 M)
3.78 GPA
Four years of varsity cross-country
Two years of varsity track (made the state’s All Mideast Region Team in the 1600m senior year)
Captain of quiz bowl team (which went to a national tournament senior year)
Three years of Science Olympiad
National Honor Society
Latin Honor Society
Several jobs and volunteer positions
This is off the top of my head, can’t remember anything else right now.

Thanks guys.
