Transfer help!

I am in the process of applying to both Barnard and Columbia for transfer from an Ivy League School in the fall…what are the advantages and disadvantages of Columbia over Barnard and Barnard over Columbia?

what ivy...

Cornell....

o really.....i go to cornell too

My D applied to both and now attends Barnard...takes some classes at both, but prefers Barnard classes. An obvious difference is the Core curriculum that Columbia requires, verses Barnard's "Nine Ways of Knowing". I suggest you search this forum or look for entries by "Primefactor" about this topic. She just graduated from Barnard and is WONDERFUL at providing info. There is lots of information on just this topic in this forum as well as the Columbia one (read through some of the posts on the "What do you like about Columbia?" thread...wade through some of the animosity and take it with a huge grain of salt!).

All I can say is my D has the perfect situation for her...she LOVES Barnard and loves being a part of the larger Columbia University in that the resources are there....

Do your research, though, so that when you apply your reasons for why the school(s) appeal to you ring true and best of luck to you!

advantages of barnard:
-i've heard they are far more welcoming to transfer students than columbia is
-better advising (your adviser has 8 students versus 200)
-girl power!
-some people think we have better food
-tunnels!
-more personal attention in class, i think a smaller class size on average
-extra support and attention given to women's issues
-not there for the ivy degree.. well, mostly. therefore, less snobby?
-not having people get your school confused with a country
-9 ways of knowing is more flexible and student-friendly than the core

advantages of columbia:
-being able to say you go to an ivy league school

clearly, barnard is better. but i'm biased :)

just wondering....when you graduate, does it say barnard or columbia on ure diploma?

it says barnard college of columbia university.
