Transfer Help

Hi everybody, I'm a 20 year old guy currently not in school... I attended Henry Ford Community College for 2 years (2 semesters each) and was majoring in music. Well over a year ago my girlfriend (now wife) got pregnant and now we have a 5 month old son. I haven't been to school in a year because me and my wife were planning on finding jobs when he was born... we're from downriver Detroit so needless to say it's been hard. My wife just recently found a job with a schedule and instead of finding a job we both think i should go back to school. (We can't afford daycare and she looked for jobs first because she has had managerial experience so she was more marketable). Now I want to go into accounting. I was planning on going to HFCC for another semester, trying to transfer to U of M Dearborn and then trying to transfer to Ann Arbor... Is transferring to Dearborn even necessary? would it help my chances even just a little?

At HFCC I made the deans list every semester and my cumulative GPA is around a 3.7... the reason I'm kind of worried about transferring is because I've never really been big on school related activities (all i did in high school was wrestling for sophomore year... got my letter though! haha). I am willing to and probably will join some clubs but it will be very hard to manage my time considering I have to watch my kid as my wife works and she is also trying to find a second job.

Would Ann Arbor be more lenient with me about not working a job or not being in as many school activities as usually wanted because of my child? Most of my classes I took for my music major aren't gonna add up to much when i go for accounting so i got a pretty close to clean slate to work off of here and I know I can do way better if I give it my all(was sorta slackin for my music major... who'da thunk?)... I also have a minor criminal record (possession of a controlled substance/misdemeanor and possession of marijuana/misdemeanor... the first one is when i was 17 last one was when i was 18)

sorry this got really long let me try to wrap up the important questions... is Dearborn necessary? how many school activities should i try to participate in? should i try to find a job also? Grades I can do... the rest I need help with.

Thanks in advance all, you're advice will be greatly appreciated and will hopefully help me out a lot. I'm setting up a meeting with a counselor at HFCC and my friend's dad is on the board for U of M Dearborn so I'll be asking him questions too... I'm really excited about this :)

edit: forgot... my ACT was 25. Don't know if that is important at this stage though?

as a transfer student with 2 years completed, your ec’s and act and h.s stats are all far less important that a 1st year college student. You do not need to transfer to UM-D to get into UM-AA. I would aim right for the ann arbor campus. I know people who have gotten in as transfers with a worse gpa, but it matters how many credits you have and where they apply. If you are going to try to get into the business school, i highly recommend going to Umich website and finding out what classes transfer for you are what gen eds you may need. If all your gen eds have been taken care of you can go straight for um. If you need maybe one or two more math classes or something, take those at CC then apply. Personally, I think the fact that you are a non-traditional would help you. Another thing to consider is moving. would you commute to campus? Where does your wife work? Can you afford the expensive living cost of ann arbor? You could always get your degree for dearborn. It is still a UofM degree. It seems to me that you don’t really need the “college experience” that Ann Arbor provides because you already have your life set up. Your main concern should be getting a degree that will allow you to minimize debt and jump into the workplace

As for moving/commuting I only live about 40 minutes away. not too bad of a drive. may want to move a lil closer. my wife works right around my house so maybe movin 20 mins away from each location may be easier…? n i’m not really looking for a “college experience” as much as I’m looking for the best education possible.
