Transfer housing costs too much

UC San Diego Future Housing - The Village at Torrey Pines, West

Apparently the new transfer housing complex called "The Village" will cost students about
$1310-1580/month.

That seems like a ridiculous rip off, what is it like a mansion or something? Sure the cost of meal plans are included, but it still seems a little ridiculous. Are all the on campus housing that expensive? Some of the numbers on the housing website makes it seem like they only upped the price for this new transfer housing complex.

that turns out to be 13-15k a year. I think that is about on par with other housing, slightly more

Really? According to the website the other on campus housing costs at most a bit over 10k a year. Are they just charging more because it’s a new complex? :frowning: Guess I’m not going to get to break it in.

I’d have to say that is slightly on the expensive side. Last year, I paid about 9200-9400ish (don’t remember exactly) for a single in the Warren Dorms. Of course these are apartments, and if it’s located on campus there is that convenience. Not sure how they compare to on campus apts, since I decided to go off campus.

You’d be in the outskirts of ERC anyway. Unless you’re taking MMW classes, it’s hardly convenient (on par with living in Sixth/Revelle apts)

Dang it I might end up having to live with my parents and take the bus then. The other apartment prices at UCSD are a only bit over 10k tops, why the hell is this new complex so expensive? Oh well, screw the on campus housing experience then.

Hows living in an apartment near UCSD by the way? Probably a lot cheaper than this damned transfer housing complex right?

Apartments near UCSD are cheaper than on campus housing if you room with someone.
Right now I’m in a 1bed 1bath, with 2 roommates- rent +utilities + internet= $450/month
Then I spend about 200 more on food each month. But it still less than if i were on campus.

That sounds pretty good. However I guess the problem is financial aid. I’m someone that will likely be receiving as much aid as they can possibly give, and someone that needs it. The question is though, are they going to cut my aid significantly if I decide to live off campus?

No I dont think so. When I filled out FAFSA last year I put down on campus housing…(before I knew I was admitted for winter quarter) and I didnt correct it until december when my parents’ divorce was finalized. Then I changed it to off campus housing and nothing really changed I think… My EFC had changed throughout the year though. First it increased, then decreased to a really low number… probably because of my parents’ situation.
