Tips for what to ask for when you are a new transfer student ?
Do you have much choice ?
If you find a roommate of your own, likely to get paired upon request ?
If you really want a certain program house or a single, can you get it as a transfer student.
Seems like a big think as I read about the in house lottery making it hard to stay
on campus unless you stay in the same dorm again as a junior. I think my son would
be happiest on campus, hoping he gets into a building he will be happy to stay in.
He lived off campus his freshman year and looking forward to living on campus as a transfer to Cornell now !
@blevine I have a couple of friends who transferred in. You won’t have a choice of which dorm you are living in - but you’ll be in the nice housing on west and you’ll be with other transfer students who are in your same boat. It’s a good environment from what I’ve heard. Most people move off junior and senior years but I believe there are options available if you want to continue to live on campus.
S1 was a transfer and was placed in Shelton Court and not with another transfer. West is NOT guaranteed for transfers.
Ok. Sheldon Court is on the edge of Collegetown. Avoid living in Schuyler House if possible, as it is in the Commons and is essentially an annoying bus ride away from the main campus.
Thanks. I read you can request a roommate and single/double but no guarantees of course.
As far as junior year (rising soph soon) I was thinking my son would appreciate the convenience of a 2nd
year on campus, and he missed out on the freshman year. Even at the college he came from,
he was essentially a commuter, getting a dorm very far from campus. I am sure he would like the 10 min
walk to class that you can get only on campus, after spending 40 minutes each way to school freshman year.
So I just wonder, assuming you happy with the dorm you are placed in, is the in house lottery really that helpful to stay, or must one really plan to look off campus ? Just asking because I know you
need to make such a decision earlier than later to have more off campus choices. Given he is new,
I would say he is likely to wait until end of 1st semester to decide, both to see if he meets
potential roommates for off campus, maybe wait long enough for the lottery if he likes his building.
Thoughts ?
Does you son have any interest in going greek? S1 was a transfer and lived in Shelton court for one semester and then moved in Fraternity house for Soph Spring and Fall JR. Went abroad for Spring Jr and now lives in off-campus apartment.
I don’t see him going greek, unless there is one for kids who love video gaming over drinking
Then again, I did not plan to do so when I was a new student, but I did ! Certainly an option, things change.
Thanks
Phi Delta Theta - “Phi Dry” is a nationally “Dry” fraternity. There is a chapter on campus at Cornell.
@3rdsontocollege hate to break it to you… but they’re actually not dry. The Cornell chapter does a fair amount of drinking lol
@CGZoo42 Thanks, funny, my son said not really “dry” but less then his and others.
