Ill be transferring to Temple in the fall and I will be a sophmore. Basically, i want to know some good ideas on where to live: on campus or off campus and what places. Obviously, since im transferring, im not going to know anyone. So im probably thinking I should live on campus....But i have no idea what to di and need some help..

If you want to live on campus, you should know that it is more expensive than living off campus (approx 1000-2000 depending on which dorm you live in and where you live off campus).

The best dorms are 1300 and Temple Towers. Temple Towers is sophomore-only , and it is beautiful. All of the rooms are apartment style (kitchen, living room/dining room). But there is a chance you could live with anywhere from 1 to 7 other people (the school remodeled the dorms a few years ago and made 8 person apartments - much to the students dismay) (TRY TO GET THESE! People will be moving out and some will become available (I think they are filled up now, but people leave/drop out). All sophomores so you will meet a lot of people your age)
1300 are the honors dorms. They have apartment style dorms for the upperclassmen. I don’t know if you can live there as an upperclassmen if you aren’t honors. But as a sophomore you can either have a suite/quad style (2 bedroom, bathroom, with 1 other roommate and 2 suite mates in the other bedroom). There are also apartment style for junior and seniors that sophomores can get if there are some left over after jun/sen first pick.

Off campus: Temple is connected with a lot of real estate companies who have properties you can rent for. Look to spend anywhere from about 500-800 bucks a month (with or without utilities - it really depends on who you rent from).
When living off campus, stay within 5 to 6 blocks. It’s just more convenient and safer. There are some awesome and beautiful places. I would say try to stay within the boundaries of Diamond to the north and 18th to the west, but people live outside of these boundaries. If you live to the west of campus, you’ll have closer access to the retail stores, movie theater, and grocery store.
Also, you can check out The Edge, University Village, Oxford Village, Sydenham Commons. These are associated with Temple and on Temple’s off-campus website. (Note: Sydenham Commons are the best. I’ve heard horror stories with management from Univ and Ox Villages, Edge is OK). Check out the websites of developers who manage properties close to Temple. You could get a large 3/4/5/6 bedroom house with multiple baths, full kitchen, 2 stories for less than a dorm. Also join Temple Class of (I guess 2015 for you?) and look at the ads that people post. A lot are for great apartments nearby for $500-700.

Whew, I think I covered it all. Any other questions? Just post them.

Hi Crumiecake!
Thanks for your report on housing. I was wondering, what makes 1300 preferable to 1940? (On the tour, the tour guides told us that 1940 was the “best” dorm?)

1940 is a good rival to 1300, and if you get a 1940 dorm you’d be in good shape. 1940 is right next to the J&H dining hall. It’s is closer to shops on campus (7-11, Maxi’s (bar & food type place), Chinese food, are all nearby. Even a wafflerie will open soon.) 1940 is a sophomore dorm also, I just checked. 1940 also has the suite style - 2 people/room, 4/suite and a private bathroom that all 4 share.

1300 is newer (only by 2 years, but still newer). A lot of rooms in 1940 have cinder block walls (1300 has a few of those too, but most have smooth walls - so that adds to a homey feel).
The biggest difference that puts 1300 on top is that it has apartment style dorms, which 1940 doesn’t have. Of course, first year students cannot get the apartment style dorms, but they are a big plus for upperclassmen. Having your own kitchen and making your own meals is such a convenience. If your dorm doesn’t have a kitchen, you are required to have a meal plan and SAC and dining food can get boring rather quickly. 1300 is also the closest dorm (maybe a part from The Edge) to the grocery store.
1300 is also the honors dorm (like I said). So if you are an honors student, you may have some classes in 1300, which is a nice bonus to not have to walk in bad weather to your classes. 1300 is also close to the SAC, which is the other dining area (with better food, IMO). 1300 is on Cecil B Moore Ave and less than a block from Broad, so right across Broad, on Cecil B Moore are: Barnes & Noble w/ Starbucks, Wendy’s, Draught Horse Tavern, the IBC and TUF (gyms), Subway, Dunkin Donuts, subway station, and the movie theater. There’s a farmer’s market steps from the entrance of 1300 in the warmer months

Wow thanks for all the input. Its really a big help. But just to be clear, you think it would be best for me to try out the temple towers and or 1940 (not 1300 cuz im not an honors student) Also do you think its a big deal if i dont know anyone coming in to room in these places? Thanks for the help

Try to get Temple Towers. They are the best (also most expensive, but if you’re ok with that, try to get these). All sophomores, refurbished, huge. If you check the Temple Class of 2015 Facebook page, you might see people looking for roommates for their Towers apartment.
If there is no way to get Towers, go for 1940. Still good, but no apartment style so you would need to get a meal plan.
1300 is also an option if they accept non-honors upperclassmen. I know freshman who are non-honors can get housing (the suite style) but I don’t know about upperclassmen. But they might because Temple is known to have a “Two-year-on/Two-year-off” policy where housing for your first two years is “guaranteed” (honestly, it’s not “really” guaranteed - they just say it is… but most people can get housing.).

Alternatively: Look for off-campus housing. It’s cheaper, a little nicer, and only a few blocks from campus. A lot of students do this soph/junior/senior year. People also look for roommates on Facebook, so if you meet a nice person who needs an extra roommate for their 3/4/5 bedroom house, and are comfortable with that, go for it!
I personally didn’t get a dorm my freshman year, and lived off-campus. It was great because my roommies were really nice. But just a warning: you won’t meet as many people as a dormer would. That was a big drawback. But I got into Honors and will live in a 1300 apartment next year.

Someone in another post said that they Temple reserves housing for transfers specifically in (I think) Temple Towers, so this would add to your chances of getting that.

As for not knowing anyone? Don’t stress about it. Temple is such a big school and no one will know if you’re new. But dorming definitely gives you the opportunity to meet people (obviously). You’ll have your roommates and the people on your floor who will be new to the floor/building and want to meet new people. Yes people will have made friends last year, but does that turn them off to meeting new people? No! Plus, there are other transfer students who are in your boat.

pamom:
Temple is constantly patrolled by campus police and students are always walking around campus at any time of the day or night. Also, the area around 1300 has really bright lights at night. Also, there is a 24-hr security at the front desk with security cameras that watch over the lobby and area surrounding the dorm. If someone tried to break into the windows on the ground floor, they would be seen. Also, most of the building is surrounded by a 6/7 foot gate in front of the ground floor windows.
As far as I know, there haven’t been any reports of break ins in the ground floor dorms.

Hey this is months late lol but I just found this. I’m gonna be a transfer too for the fall 2012 semester and I’ll also be a sophomore! They place me in the edge and said all transfers get placed there. JW if you got placed in temple towers?! I wanted that one but they said since I was a transfer I couldn’t get in even though their website says otherwise :/

hey this is random but I am planning on transferring to Temple for fall 2013, and I was just wondering when you guys applied for transfer/when you got your acceptance? Thanks (:
