What are transfer students planning on with regards to housing? Are you all doing the off-campus thing or are you dorming it out?

Im planning on probably staying in the dorms. I think it will be a great way to become involved and meet new people

I'm going to be in the dorms too. It's a great experience I want to be a part of and it's a great way to meet new people. I'm thinking about going to Manzanita Village

I did Manzanita Village as a transfer this year, and overall, I didn't really like it that much. My house was almost all 2nd year continuing students (there was one other transfer in the house), and I felt it was difficult to get adjusted to living there because half the people are extremely quiet and half the people have friends from last year that they usually hang out with. So I'm actualy going to rush a frat for spring quarter... Of course, your results may vary.

oh wow see I like it because I heard it's more quiet than the other ones..less party's. And it's new and nice and it's right next to the beach. I hope I can find friends there. Are the people in SB friendly or shallow? I'm hoping in finding decent people.

Most people are friendly, but it's just to quiet for me. I was always a pretty quiet person before I came to UCSB, so I picked Manzanita Village and even picked the "doesn't listen to music out loud" option on the housing application because I wanted quiet... but as soon as I came to UCSB, my attitude completely changed.

The problem I have with my house in Manzanita Village is that 1/3 of the people are deaf mutes (sorry for using that term, but that's the only way I can say it), 1/3 of the people only talk to friends they made in previous years, and 1/3 are really cool about hanging out with people in the house, but those 1/3 are more about binge drinking on the weekends. I also got stuck with a pretty bad roommate.

I came to UCSB looking for people who like to do a lot of sober activities, like going bowling, skiing, playing intramural sports, watching the UCSB sports teams, stuff like that. Sadly, there's pretty much no one in my dorm like that, which is why I decided that when Spring Rush comes around next week, I'm going to join a frat.

By the way, I know this sounds cynical, but I have to say, I think UCSB does a pretty damn poor job of integrating transfer students into the school. For example, transfers have the "Transitions" summer school program, but it's so half assed compared to the Freshman Summer Start Program. For one, they don't combine it with the regular orientation like they do for freshman taking FSSP, forcing you to take 2 trips to Santa Barbara, which is annoying for us Nor-Cal'ers. Not only that, but the Transitions orientation was pretty much just a 30 minute orientation, and after that we picked summer classes. It was completely unnecessary to force people to drive to Santa Barbara, everything could have been explained online.

I'm the kind of person who likes to complain, so I've complained to Housing & Residential services before, but they seem to think that the current system is fine. I still plan to write to chancellor just to see what happens. Anyway, good luck to you guys! I still really enjoy the school despite all the stuff I've said.

How difficult is it to get a spot in the dorms (particularly Manzanita)? I'm really excited to go to uni, but I'm not too keen on what I'm hearing with regards to the intense party scene, so I'm trying to stay out of IV as much as possible.

Supposedly in the year before mine, everyone who applied for transfer housing got it, and I'm pretty sure it was the same for me, so you shouldn't have any problems getting in.
