I know housing is essentially guaranteed all for years at Dartmouth, but is it required that transfers spend their first year in Dartmouth housing or can they attempt to find something off campus?

I don't think anyone is required to live in Dartmouth housing.

Housing is guaranteed for freshmen and sophomores. I think that the people who get the squeeze now are juniors because seniors get first pick in room draw.

But by the same token, there is a lot of fluxuation from one term to the next with the number of juniors actually needing housing on campus because some students live off campus and others are off campus doing study abroads, internships and leave terms.

Even for people who get shut out of housing for room draw, eventually it all straightens itself out and every one has a place to live.

Only first-year students are required to live in college dorms. This does not include transfer students.
