D applied for BCSA major. She got accepted to CFA school but got rejected from SCS. She needs to be accepted to both the schools in order to proceed with BCSA major. Now she can only major in Art. Is there any possibility that she can apply internal transfer into BCSA after admitted to Art major?. Is it relatively easy or hard? What are the requirements to transfer into BCSA from Art major? Or is there any way she can minor in CS because she likes programming. She submitted a lot of animation stuff using Java programming for the portfolio.
She already accepted to UT Austin, USC (Computer Science major) ,Georgia Tech (Waitlisted) but she is really interested in CMU. I highly appreciate if anyone can advise.

Hey,

I’m in the opposite situation (accepted SCS, waitlisted to CFA). I’d be curious to know what the responses are on this. I did find an internal transfer form you can check out here (see the left sidebar) that might be helpful?

It is certainly possible to attempt an internal transfer, but be warned that it is quite difficult and there are certainly no guarantees. If you would only be interested in CMU with the guarantee of BCSA, this is probably not a chance you want to take. Doing a minor (or maybe double major, depends on class availability, I believe) might be a more reasonable choice.

In terms of being accepted to SCS only, one thing to keep in mind is that you have to have a minor - I’m pretty sure that you could do an art minor (double check, though), so again, that might be one way of going about it.

Thank you! Let me call the admission counselor by next week and discuss about the possibilities for either tranferring to BCSA or having minor in CS and will keep you posted. Whichever is possible is really worth as long as it is CMU.

As far as minoring in CS, I think anyone can do it as long as you take the necessary classes, but those classes might be hard (but certainly possible) to get into for non-SCS students.

It is definitely possible to transfer to BCSA internally. However, there is an internal application process, and the transfer is NOT guaranteed. Students seeking to transfer from SCS to BCSA will need to present a portfolio (for Art, Design or Architecture) or audition (for Music or Drama) meeting the rigorous standards of their desired school in the College of Fine Arts. Students seeking a BCSA from one of the BFA programs will need to be admitted to the School of Computer Science, generally on the basis of their grades and math scores.

A portfolio of highly traditional drawings is unlikely to convince the School of Art’s admissions committee for internal BCSA transfers from Computer Science. Instead, they will want to see evidence of creative practice in software arts – for example, self-programmed games, software art, mechatronic scuplture, etc.

BFA students seeking an internal transfer to BCSA, by applying to the School of Computer Science, should enroll in CS courses during their first two semesters on campus. Performance less than a ‘B’ in these courses will almost certainly kill the chance of a BCSA transfer.

It is always possible to minor in a subject at CMU without such permissions. A minor consists of just 6 courses. There are many Art students with CS minors, and many CS students with Art minors.

Finally, keep in mind that the CMU School of Art has an “Electronic & Time Based Arts” concentration which allows students to study game design, animation etc. without any required courses in CS. This may be enough for many students. Learning to use an modelling/animation program like Maya or Rhino, and learning to analyze sorting algorithms, are not the same thing!
