Transfer into Brown from Northeastern

Hey,

I just got accepted to Northeastern University from a local community college as an English major. I’ll be enrolled in the spring 2006 semester and I’m wondering, do you think I would have a shot at transfering into Brown? I’m only a sophmore right now. The basics I guess that are important for transfer students:

High School GPA: 3.0/4.0
SAT: M-610/ V-570
TONS of extracirricular: varsity lacrosse & football, school magazine, students for enviornmental action, photography club, etc.

Local Community College for ONE full semester
-Liberal Arts major
-Enrolled in basic general education classes (stats, western civ. history, college comp., film, art, art history, etc.)
GPA:3.4/4.0
-Student Senate (Secretary)

While at CC, also employed full-time in a local hardware store
-Customer service rep.

Extracirricular: Donate 2 Sundays a month at food pantry, in Spring as an assistant lacrosse coach for youth league, Special Olympics coach Spring & Winter, part-time volunteering at Big Brothers Big Sisters, Internship at Governor’s Office, another Internship at Democratic National Headquarters in my state

Will be attending Northeastern University in January 2006, English & Cinema Studies major, most likely will be heavily involved in film/photography groups, university newspaper, club athletics

I mean, do I stand a chance as a transfer for Fall 2006?

They accept 200 transfers a year, it's worth a shot. Especially if you're good at football or lacrosse, athletics could be a nice hook for you.

Is 200 really a lot of transfers...makes me wonder at my chances...

sorry, I think it will be a huge uphill battle...even if you were a recruited athlete you would need better. As is, your academic index is too low..sorry again.

"Huge uphill battle". Very concise description but I do appreciate the honestly. In your opinion though, is it even worth the $70 application fee or should I just let what is be?

You can try because you have good ECs, but you high school record is weak and unfortunately you didn't do well enough at your CC to make up for it. I would say its pretty much a no-go. Retake the SAT and get over a 1400 and get a 3.7+ at Northeastern and maybe its within reach.

i am trying to make up my mind as to whether or not i should put brown on my transfer list. i was rejected for freshman admission, so i am wondering if it is going to be any different this time around? i'm not sure how much about me will be so different that they should accept me this time. sure, this time i'd be applying from berkeley (i would like to transfer for many significant reasons, not just so that i can attend brown), but 70 bucks is a lot to spend when you're so uncertain... plus i need financial aid and they're need aware for transfers.. hmm what to do!!!???? i've had brown on my mind since the very beginning of the admissions process, and now i'm wondering if i should just let it go and move on.. everyone else is telling me i should.. everyone says brown looks for an extremely unique kind of individual, a 'brown' kind of individual. maybe i should accept that there's just something inherently un-brown about me and stop chasing after it??!!

just noticed this is my 500th post!! woo hoo ;]

sorry your stats are too low. There are much more qualified candidates for the spot.

Yeah sorry astro you aren't getting in, this is Brown we are talking about. Pinkearmuffs how are your stats?

(this is Maize&Blue22 for those of you here who remember me from last year - I can't for the life of me remember my old PW)

You can definately do it. I did. In fact, I saved my Brown acceptance letter as a keepsake.

I graduated HS with around a 2.3 UW hs GPA (including failing Algebra II) and I was able to bounce back and get transfer acceptances from UMichigan, Brown, ND, NW, Rice, and several others.

I'm batting .1000 in college admissions with stats that were much worse than yours at that age - although I only applied to a local satellite campus right out of HS.

The only reason I post this is because last year I made a nearly identical post and the people here told me not to apply, as well. It's probably still up if you care to search for it.

Go to college, get A's, and apply.

Exactly, transfers will have a much easier time getting in than people think.
I still don't know if I want to fill out my application (even though I'm here for the semester anyway) because I feel like I WOULD get in, and I don't want to have make a decision between coming back to Brown or going back to Tulane.
I signed up for the mailing list and everything, but I still don't know. . .it's been pretty good here, the classes are awesome, but the social scene is. . .well. . .it's not Tulane.

I don't know about feeling like you would get in (I also had a 35 act and 800x3 SATII's). Remember the acceptance rate is still hovering just under 20%, and it goes further down if you need finaid.

It is, however, worth a shot.

If you really like Brown and would definitely come here if you got in, you might as well apply.

That said, it's quite a long shot.

slipper - my sat was 1420 and my uw gpa ~4.0 weighted gpa ~4.29 ec's were nothing spectacular, they were ordinary - prose editor of lit magazine, volunteer work.. blah blah.. attending uc berkeley out of state right now and it is a financial pain that i'm not sure how i ever got into in the first place. not to mention the large impersonal education i'm getting...

Just try and get a solid GPA - over a 3.5 and I think you have a shot. Keep doing the ECs you did in high school as well, they want to see continued commitment.

LawSchoolBound, you are a COMPLETELY different case. you had a 4.0 at Michigan! they don't care about high school with that kind of performance. this kid had a 3.4 at a CC. HUGE difference between that and what you had.

"but the social scene is. . .well. . .it's not Tulane."

what do you mean?

Tulane is fun.

oh ok. but brown isn't?

Not nearly as much.
