Transfer Into Northeastern

So I am currently a sophomore at UMass Amherst and I am planning on applying to Northeastern for the Fall 2013 semester. I live just outside of Boston and have always wanted to go to school in the city. The problem is my grades are not too impressive and I fear that my gpa will not allow to get in.

My first semester I got a 2.3 and the next I got a 2.9. So as of now my cumulative gpa is a 2.72 through 22 credits. This semester I am taking 5 classes for 19 credits and have picked up my schoolwork quite a bit. I have received all of my first exam grades back and as of right now I do not have anything below an 85 in any class. I calculated what my gpa would be for this semester and if I where to continue getting these same grades I should finish the semester with at least a 3.6. This would bring my cumulative gpa up to a 3.1.

I have about 100 hours of community service that I completed over the summer as well as 20 hours of Job Shadowing. The only Extra curricular activities I have were done in high school (which is still eligible to be put up on the common app). I played varsity soccer Junior and senior year and was a co-captain each of those years. I know since I have enough credits I do not need to send in my high school stats or SAT scores but do you guys think I should anyways? I received a 3.4 gpa and a combined math, reading and writing score of 1610.

I plan on writing a very good essay as well as getting a solid letter of recommendation so I hope this will help. Also I do not plan on living on campus and my father has even taken classes at Northeastern (not sure if that helps). I also feel that even though my gpa is pretty low It will definitely show a good upward trend going from a 2.3 to a 3.6. Sorry this is so long but I just wanted to give as much info as possible. So what do you guys think? Do I have any shot of getting in? Any responses are appreciated.

I’m currently a freshman at UMass Amherst and I’m looking to transfer into Northeastern for next fall as well. I live in Kennedy.

Oh thats cool, i live in prince right now. How are your grades so far if you dont mind me asking? I feel that since my first two semesters were so bad i might as well not even bother applying yet. But i do really want to attend Northeastern.

Bump, any input is appreciated!

i’m planning on applying for transferring in spring 13 semester!

What are your grades like if you dont mind me asking?

Northeastern has gotten a lot more competitive in recent years. From their website for transfer applicants, it says that their most “competitive” applications contained a 3.3 GPA and higher, with excellent letters of recommendation, and a diverse background. Goodluck man.

Yeah the 3.3 gpa is whats making me nervous the most. Hopefully i can get around that with a strong essay and a good recommendation letter. Thanks for the response

I haven’t completed a full semester yet so i wouldn’t be able to tell you in terms of a definite gpa but i expect to get anywhere from a 3.49-3.65 for the first semester if all goes as planned and want to maintain that for next semester. I’m worried about the recommendations the most. All my classes are lectures with 200+ kids

Yea im in the same boat as you, everyone of my classes are also 200+ people. Im worried because tomorrow is the middle of the semester and i still haven’t made any relationships with my professors. I think im gonna start going to office hours next week though. How much time in advance should you give your professors to write a LOR?

any really easy gen ed’s you’d suggest for next semester?

Botony for gardeners with Daniel Gerber and philosophy 160 intro to ethis with Chris meachem. Both are very easy classes in my opinion, i haven’t gotten anything below an A yet in either class.

Thank you for the response, i will definitely pm you if i have any questions in the future.

Hi,

i was just searching for stuff related to transferring to Northeastern and ran in to this. i’m also thinking of transferring to Northeastern for Fall 2013 semester and one question that i have now is when should i ask for a recommendation letter ? I have a few big classes this semester and didnt quite get in touch with the prof so my question now is whether or not i should wait until Spring semester or should i just ask the prof i have now to write one for me ? What are you guys planning on to do ?

Hey guys, I’m in UMass Amherst too! Leach Hall. Wow, there’s a lot of people transferring to Northeastern from there. Should I make an official thread for Northeastern Fall 2013 Transfers?

@thatdude32 I’m taking Philosophy 160 next semester, thanks for the info ;)

@onsera I have no idea how it’s supposed to be done but I’m planning to ask for one of mine around winter break (e-mail my Chem Honors professor and asking for the rec because that’s the only small class I’m in). Also hoping to be a TA for a class next semester and asking for a rec from a professor of that class.

@nikanikanika I just asked my japanese prof yesterday and he said he will write me an letter before the final exam as he is going to japan right after school ends and wont be back until next may or so. Also i think only 1 is needed for transferring ?

@onsera Yeah, i just looked at the reqs once again, you’re right, it’s only one.

Northeastern doesn’t require Instructor Evaluations, does it? Couldn’t find anything about them.

Hey guys!

I’m from Rhode Island, currently go to Penn State, and am applying to Northeastern for Fall 2013.

I definitely feel you guys as far as how tough it is to get recommendation letters from professors in huge lecture halls. My only small class is my English class, so I plan on doing that. Another tip is to get one from an employer/advisor if you are closer to someone in that position.
