Transfer into Smeal from college of communications

I haven’t committed to PSU but I was wondering what are the transfer requirements in order to transfer into Smeal from the College of Communications? I’m particularly interested in marketing.

I think you would transfer to DUS; which I think would be easily approved. You would then take the same pre-Smeal requirements for the first two years. Then get accepted Smeal at end of sophomore year; if you meet the requirements.
You need to be in Smeal (which is really pre-Smeal) or DUS to declare a Smeal major at end of sophomore year. You can not go directly from Communications to Smeal.
Technically; since you have not yet accepted your offer to Communications, I guess you could call Admissions and ask to be reconsidered for Smeal (pre-Smeal) directly…I would think that would be a long shot at this point however.

@PennsyDad so basically what you’re saying is that I would have to apply to Smeal at the end of sophomore year? Also would you suggest I call and ask to change into DUS instead of staying in communications?

If you want to be a Marketing major in Smeal; yes I would call and ask to be switched. You might be able to switch at your orientation, but probably better to call ahead of time. Technically; no one applies to Smeal until after their sophomore year. Even people admitted directly to Smeal have to complete Entrance to Major requirements their first to years with minimum GPA and minimum grades for some of the classes. Google Entrance to Major for Smeal for all of the details.
You can only apply to Smeal from pre-Smeal or DUS, so I see no reason to stay in Communications at the point, if you know you want to be in Marketing eventually.

@PennsyDad thanks so much! very helpful

1° call and ask to be switched to Pre-Smeal if you’d rather have a Smeal adviser 2° if not, ask to be switched to DUS.

^^another difference we found is my son also has a Smeal mentor. A Smeal student who will be his mentor for the next year. Son received a phone call from his mentor a few nights ago.
