Transfer into Top Boarding Schools

Hey guys,

Thanks so much for your responses on this forum. They've been absolutely helpful. I'm writing again for my brother. I was wondering how hard it will be to transfer from one boarding school (lower-tier) to a top-tier boarding school such as Exeter, Andover, St. Paul's School, etc. for the 10th grade. How competitive is it? What are the numbers, etc.?

Thanks so much for your responses in advance.

There's considerable space at all those schools for tenth grade. If your brother has done well at his current school and has 90 plus SSATs, he'd have as good a chance as anyone.

The online references are www.boardingschoolreview.com , www.schools.com and www.petersons.com. Some of the information on boardingschoolreview is not up to date. Petersons data is for the class entering 2005. Just as college entrance has become more competitive, boarding school entrance for the name brand schools has also become more competitive.

What would a typical transfer applicant's stats look like? Does anyone have any anecdotes, data released by the admissions office, etc.? Thanks so much for your responses!

I think if he is a strong applicant, he has as good of a chance.

if you are looking for financail aid then only apply to Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, SPS, Choate. They give very generous aid package.

Your brother may look into Hotchkiss, Hopkins and Tafts etc. too

Milton is very good with financail aid, but number of boarding students are very small compare to day students. So will have a tough time as not many people around. Groton is very small thus their aid package tends to very stingy so do not apply unless you are a URM minority. They will give aid but not a good financail aid package. If you are in NY city Collegeiate, dalton and other similar school provide very nice aid.

Send me a PM if I can help you in any way based on my limited knowledge.

There's a prep school called Hopkins? Or where you thinking of the university?
Newparent, Milton's boarding/day is 50/50, so the number of boarding students is the exact same compared to day students.

Hopkins is a prep school in New Haven. I don't think it's a boarding school, though.

Hopkins is a day school.

My kid got admission in Milton but some of his friends have told him that majority of kids in Milton are locals, So my information could be wrong.

But Milton gives very nice financial aid offers. This I can say with full knowledge. And school sends many kids to top prep school

Since my kid did not apply to hopkins, I do not know.

That is why I said my knowledge is pretty limited.

There's probably a lot of boarders from MA. I'd consider them as locals.

milton's boarding life sucks..according to a boarder at milton
