Transfer nursing programs?

Hi everyone!

I’m currently a freshman in my second semester at UT Dallas majoring in biology. I finished high school in PISD top 7% and got a full scholarship to UTD plus $1,000 stipend per semester. I currently am at 15 credit hours per semester.

I planned on using my biology degree to go to med school but realized it wasn’t what I really wanted. I currently have a 3.83 GPA out of 4.0 and am looking to transfer to a school with a BSN program and perhaps become a CRNA (certified registered nurse anesthetist). My dream school is UW Seattle but I’m afraid it’s too expensive out of state. I live at home with my low income father and can’t afford to pay for school. Financial aid is a definite but I’m not sure how much it will cover or how it works. I definitely don’t want to be in debt. What are the prospects of a scholarship for a transfer student? Overall I’m just confused on what the best move is since the prospect of moving to Washington to pursue a degree in nursing on my own is somewhat scary yet exciting.

Any recommendations? I’ve already completed my core classes and other such as Gen Chem I/II, college physics, and 2 semesters of calculus. Should I stay at UTD for free and complete more classes that could possibly transfer to another school for my nursing degree?

YES! Most non-direct entry Nursing Programs starts in the Junior Year, so you can finish all your nursing prerequisites at UTD (zero tuition cost) and then transfer to another 4-year institution that offers a BSN at the end of your Sophomore year… My guess is a public University in Texas would be your low cost option, and might not be as competitive as out of state nursing programs. Are you currently commuting from home to UTD? Are there any public BSN programs within easy commuting distance from your home (University of Texas at Arlington?)? Are nursing programs highly competitive in Texas as it is in other states? Keep in mind that to get into a CRNA program, a “high” GPA is required. You also need, at a minimum, of one year acute care experience ( adult ICU).

In addition to completing your BSN prerequisites, is it possible to also complete your pre-med courses? This will leave open your option to pursue medical school after your BSN or in case you change your mind in a year or two.

TWU’s nursing school is off Inwood very close to Parkland. That would allow you to commute from home and save money.

I went to TWU’s nursing school many years ago. It is a very good nursing school.
