Transfer of majors

I'm moving into San Francisco this winter and I'm thinking of transferring into UC Berkeley as an engineering major since I have recently discovered that the bio major / premed is not really for me anyone. Is there any chance that I get in there first as a bio transfer second change my major into IT a semester later?

PLS HELP!

Apply for the major you want to be in. If the major even allows transfers to change into it, it’ll be much harder than transfer admissions were in the first place. Trying to change majors just complicates the process.

Taking a step back, you seem a little bit all over the place with transferring. So, quick crash course!

The UC system (including Cal) really only wants junior transfers. That means you should have 60+ semester credits by the time you transfer. You apply at the start of your sophomore year, don’t miss the November deadline. California CC students get priority, so if you don’t have enough credits yet it may be a good idea to do a semester/year at a CC. Prerequisites are also super important for transfers, check assist.org to see what classes you’re expected to have taken. It won’t have articulations for 4 year schools or OOS, but it’ll give you an idea. For Cal, essays and ECs also carry a lot of weight, especially in CoE you need great grades, the right coursework, and good ECs/essays to get in.

You also need to sort out your major. As far as I know, Berkeley doesn’t really have “IT”. If you’re interested in CS, there are two choices. EECS is in CoE, it’s a BS and tends to be more tech heavy. EECS admissions are pretty competitive, but it admits directly to the major. You cannot change majors to EECS as a transfer. L&S CS is a BA, in Letters and Science, and it admits all students undeclared. That means it’s a little easier to get into the school, but you’ll have to petition for the CS major after you transfer. I think it’s possible to change into L&S CS, but again you might as well apply directly to it.

If you do decide to apply as one major and then change to another, it’ll be a lot easier if the two are in the same college. Again, I’d recommend not trying to change, you should also check each department’s page for any rules about change of major/college and specific policies about transfer students. You can see a list of all majors here: <a href=“Academic Programs & Majors - Office of Undergraduate Admissions”>http://admissions.berkeley.edu/majors

If I misread your post and you’re actually applying as a freshman, ignore the parts about units and pre-reqs. Changing majors is still easier if it’s within the same college, but it’s a lot more plausible as a freshman than a transfer.

Thanks you helped me a lot!
