Transfer or Not?

I'm a freshmen in college and pretty much since the day of move-in i felt like i didnt really fit into my schools environment. oh btw i got to umass amherst. i'm from boston, so i'm really used to city life and here at amherst..its dull. unless all you do is get drunk and smoke pot. otherwise life is pretty boring. theres not like malls around here except a tiny one which doesnt have anything. i'm paying around 5k in loans and then i have scholarships to cover the rest so scholarships cover abt...13k? so any ways, i dont think this is the environment for me, since its so rural, it takes at least 15 minute of walking to get to your next class, but the bus is there but if you miss it, you wait another 15 mins and by that time you are late for class. intro classes, i guess like every other university at least 300-500 kids, not learning anything, failing one course so far..outta 5.

i was thinking about transferring to somewhere in newyork? i would like new york city, but what colleges are good? i been looking at barnard and NYU. i was wondering if they give you lots of aid? since I'm from MA after they not going to give me like the amount of aid i get here? would i end up taking loads of loans since its like 50k a year? i'm trying to get into the business school, something along the lines of marketing, international business or communications..

my high school gpa, was not very good, 3.0 out of 4.0 weighted, our school does some crazy weighting and i was told by my conselor if i compared my gpa with other kids from diff schools mine will def be lower cause they weight it differently.

sats were
verbal 560
writing 570
math 490....

not sure of gpa in college right now..

any ideas of good NY colleges near NYC? with aid if possible?

oh and do they waive application fees for transfers?

bump...... anyone?? ?...

I don't think you have the stats for NYU or Barnard. If you want the city, what about Hunter college? No, they don't waive application fees for transfers.

how about fordham? or bard, its a reach for you and slightly outside of the city but pretty close to it. i dont really think you can get into NYU or barnard but you can always give it a shot...who knows? there are a lot more schools if you're willing to look in other places, and i think you should consider that. what are you looking for in a school? any other possible locations? how hard are you willing to work?

For what it's worth, it's not much different here at BU.

If s/he wants NYC, Bard won't cut it. The mall is across the rather large Hudson River and The City is two hours away. I'm also thinking those grades and test scores aren't going to carry much weight as a transfer to Bard. A 3.0 weighted (if I understand what you wrote) isn't that impressive. And Bard is expensive and does not guaranty full aid. We don't really know much about your interests or accomplishments to speculate any further.

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but if I were you, I'd get used to where I am and make the best of it. You've got a great package if all you're paying is $5000 and U. Mass is a good school! Give it a year of good accomplishment and then you might be able to have your pick of transfer opportunities.

You might want to look into Marymount Manhattan. I think it's in the Upper West Side if I recall correctly. UMass might have a stronger program for your major though. Going by the stats you have right now, they'd probably accept you, and they give scholarships that increase with your GPA. I was accepted in high school with a 2.8 GPA and 1660 on the SATs, so I'd say go for it. But like others have said, you could always work hard at college to boost your GPA and gain more match schools for next year. Your high school record will also carry less weight if you're applying for junior standing.
