HI, i am a sophomore mechanical engineering student in Mizzou, as you may know the college of engineering is not very good, and now i am considering transfer, but here is what keeps me struggling between transfer and stay: i happened to know a ME professor, he is really nice and he said he could send a recommendation letter to his friends in MIT or Stanford for me when i apply Grad school if i stay here. And now i am also working at his lab which is the biggest oscillating heat pipe lab in the nation. i don't know whether i should transfer or not, but i don't really like the atmosphere here on the other hand, you can hardly find another chance and get in such a good lab as a sophomore....so what do you guys think about this? thank you

I agree that you should think long and hard about transferring. If you stay you’ll have two more years to cement your relationship with your prof and conduct significant research.

For instance, my D1 transferred as a soph and even then she had a difficult time picking up on ECs and has not really had the success with leadership positions that she would have had had she stayed at her old school. While she’s happy she transferred, this has been one of the downsides.

thank you for your advice. first i have a better chance to get in good schools like ivy with my ECs and grades at Mizzou. international students are always measured by different criteria and it is difficult to transfer in a good school. second, i can save some time and graduate early if i stay at Mizzou, it surely takes me some time to fulfill the different course requirements in others schools. but again, i really don’t like the atmosphere here…so i really don’t know…

It’s a hard call, as with most tough decisions there are pros and cons and it’s very difficult to predict which is the best choice. Best of luck, in the end you kinda have to go with your gut.
