Okay so I just finished my first semester of college at a school in Florida and I was absolutely miserable!!! I suffered really bad anxiety and it even made me depressed. I visited the counselor every week but it still did not seem to help. I had never visited the school but saw the campus the first time the day before I moved in. I was between my current school and florida’s flagship college. That college was my dream school but since I am out of state it was about $38,000 a year. I currently attend my school for about $18,000 a year. I just really don’t know what to do because I don’t see myself spending 4 years at my current school but it was my cheapest option and I am still happy that I get to be in Florida. I don’t know whether I should take the semester off and cope or just return to not get out of the swing of schoolwork. Is it just school in general or my college? So many kids talk about transferring out of my school and it just upsets me even more. I got accepted to my state university, but since I live in PA the cost is still double my current college! What would you do? I am so upset that I wasted my good high school grades and am now stuck with my college grades. I also heard its very hard to receive scholarships as a transfer. Which makes it worse because I receive no grants
Also quick responses would be greatly appreciated considering my spring semester starts in a week
Do you have to cover all of your college costs out of your own pocket with scholarships, grants, loans?
You could consider saving money, going to community college for a couple years, and then applying to transfer.
I do! However I have about $45,000 in savings that I was lucky enough to inherit and to go towards my college fund
Keep in mind that you can’t transfer to UF, till you’ve completed 60 credits (or earn an AA), and then you have to apply to your college (based on major) at UF. UF doesn’t accept Freshman/sophomore transfers.
That first semester of college can be rough. It usually does get better, but everyone situation is unique.
What are your in-state options like?
One option is to complete your AA at your local CC, and then transfer to UF. That would reduce the cost of UF to 2 years, while giving you a bit more time to get used to college level classes (and save money by living at home). More than 1/4 (close to 1/3) of all undergraduate students at UF are transfer students.
Good Luck!
Thank you so much! Will UF accept my classes from a PA community college? Also my other option is to attend penn state in the fall… But that is still $30,000 a year
Yes, in most cases they will. You can work with a UF academic advisor, to determine which PA CC classes they will accept.
It’s based on your major, and which college you apply too. For example, if you want to apply to the Mechanical Engineering department, you would work with an advisor in this department to review your PA classes and determine which ones they will accept. You can show them your proposed clases, so you know ahead of time which classes will be accepted. UF isn’t too picky…a Calc 1 class is a Calc 1 class.
It’s a lot easier transferring from a Florida CC or public University, as Florida has state wide standards for class names, etc.
Personally, I would save the money and attend a CC, than one of the regional PSU campuses (unless you commute from home), if you DON"T plan on graduating from PSU. Just confirm that those classes would be accepted.
Good Luck!
Man, I am in pretty much the same situation as you, okay not exactly, but pretty similar.
What I would say is transfer, and don’t ever look back, becasue you can never get back those lost years of experience at the college of your dreams. In my situation in Pennsylvania, I can’t transfer to Penn State (dream flagship) until junior year. I’m kicking myself because I went to a cheaper school that had an easier road to a high GPA. GPA only came into play because I need this to get into dental school.
So I have to wait 3 more semesters now, and in my first semester I already missed storming the field after beating Ohio State and a couple of other legendary events on campus. I would give anything to redo my decision.
Transfer as soon as possible and you will not regret it, that is my personal guarantee.
Have you received more than 18 credits?! If you haven’t, you are able to reapply to penn state as a freshman for the fall!! As long as you don’t take classes in between! That’s what I did and I might be attending in the fall! I was actually accepted for this spring but thought it was too soon to rush to another school! That way you won’t have to wait until you are a junior!
I had re-submitted my “transfer/technically first year app” in late October, but my parents didn’t want me to leave a school after only one semester, so I had to contact admissions and tell told them to remove my application from the pool. I have now completed 17 credits and unfortunately will be going back to school next week, and at that point my official transcript will say that I have attempted 16 more credits, and therefore will no longer be eligible for PSU 1st year admissions. My situation is odd becasue my father is an alum at the school I currently attend, so a bail after one semester was never going to happen. Maybe after one year (which isn’t possible going to PSU), but not one semester.
I wish there were a way for PSU to offer U Park Sophmore transfers, but the truth is, my GPA is mkre important than where I go in terms of dental school admissions, so if I can survive two years and come out with a high GPA, I’ll be free.
