Transfer out of NYU

Hey guys, I'm a freshman here at NYU not really enjoying myself. I like my classes, friends etc. but the lack of community here is awful. Its depressing. Anyways I've been thinking about transferring already (fall 2011) and although my grades aren't set in stone I have a good grip on what they should be for my first semester.

High school: 3.65 GPA. (a little inflated with music courses).President of class. Good high school in Mass. Took majority honors and Ap classes. Stared in four musicals, sang in three choirs, played in band in orchestra, volunteered 100 hours each year, worked four different jobs throughout high school, traveled abroad a few times, spoke at graduation, won a principle medal of honor at graduation, was active in a bunch of other clubs...and the list goes on, and on, and on.
ACT: 26

At NYU I am a communications major. I am president of my class. On the Student Government E-board. In a choir, have volunteered a lot since I've been here. Spoke at a convention for prospective students, and work a 10 hour a week job.

Projected grades (what im worried about now. My classes aren't to difficult but I am taking 18 credits)

Algebra and Calc: B- B 4 credits
Writing the Essay: B+ 4 credits
Intro to media studies:A, A- 4 credits
Intro to music business: A 2 credits
Intro to music theory: A 2 credits
Voice Lessons : A 2 credits

Anyways those are my stats. Do schools count non academic classes in your GPA?
Also will the music classes not look to good. I mean they are hard.

Chance me on these schools:

Lehigh
University of Michigan
Umiami
BC
Tufts
Syracuse (New House)
(all college of arts and science for communications except cuse)

I'm just nervous my act scores and not getting a 3.5 gpa at NYU will affect me. Thank you!

bump…

I was in the exact same situation about a year ago - I was also a freshman at NYU happy with my courses, but disappointed with the overall non-community vibe. I ended up transferring to Tufts, and I’ve been really happy with it so far.

I think your college grades are good - you don’t need to have straight A’s to show that you can do college-level coursework. Don’t forget you’ll need at least one recommendation from a professor. This semester just focus on getting good grades and getting to know a professor (or two) for your recommendations. You’ll have time for all those essays and forms over winter break. Then just keep an open mind next semester because, who knows, maybe you’ll find your niche at NYU.

As far as chances, it’s hard to say how many transfers a school will take on any given year. There were only 24 transfers to Tufts this year, compared to ~70 last year (apparently more freshman accepted their offer of admission than Tufts thought would). Look into requirements for transferring to Michigan though - sometimes state schools have quotas of instate transfers they need to fill (from community college) which make it hard for people already at a good schools to transfer in, especially if you live out of state. That said, based on your college grades and extracurriculars, I think you have a shot at all those schools. Just apply, and make sure you visit because ALL those schools are VERY different, especially in terms of community and campus vibe.
