currently sophomore in Vanderbilt Univesity Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics major, minor in econ

college gpa as of fall semester: 3.80 (4A1B and physics lab B+) 16 credits taken
overall gpa:3.5

8 AP/summer pre-college credits going in

hs gpa: 94ish/100,I went to hs in the U.S. only for less than two years, so I didnt have ranking
sat I (800math 480cr)
sat II (720physics 800math iic 490writing)

thinking about northwestern, uchicago, dartmouth, columibia fu foundation,u penn, harvard engineering, cornell, washU,

ec: lots in hs(captain of NYC math team)... soccer and some community service in college so far
got a job in a bank last summer, and i am working two jobs to earn my tuition fee.

anyone tell me my chance?

I'm sure you hear this often, but how did you get into Vandy with a 480 CR? J/w.

I'm really not too sure...your test scores won't matter that much since you've been at Vandy for two years by the time you transfer, but still...and that writing score just further reinforces your weakness in the verbal sections. I have a feeling that, even as someone applying for junior standing, that will be a red flag that will keep you out of harvard, dartmouth, northwestern, columbia, upenn, and maybe even the others. It's definitely worth a shot, but you should do everything you can to prove your proficiency in english-related subjects. If the grades that brought your GPA down were also in English-related courses, that will only continue to hurt you.

I would consider retaking those tests if you have the time. As of now, I'm thinking:

Reaches - Northwestern, Dartmouth, Columbia, UPenn, Harvard.
High Matches - Cornell, WashU, UChicago.

Hey, he is great at quantitative stuff. If he were an American...and he were born here...then maybe 480 is just ridiculous...

but he's been in the U.S. for less than 2 years...maybe 3 by now...

your college stats are pretty good...if you apply to engineering schools...you probably have decent chances...but yea...480 is still kinda low...i wasn't born here either and english is certainly not my native language...so i understand vandyboy

How's Vanderbilt? i might considering submitting an app there...what don't you like about Vandy?

My SAT score is low, that is not an indication of my lack of motivation or my lack of preparation for the exam. I spent months preparing but I took SAT half year after I came to the U.S. Although I learnt English well in China, however, it was still very difficult for me to do well on it at that time. I guess that was why I was rejected by Cornell when I applied ED two years ago. Luckily, my inability to score well on verbal did not deter me distinguishing myself in college with high GPA. I think the admission officers can feel assured of my language ability to handle quantitative tasks, given my performance in the challenging engineering courses I took.
I got 250 out of 300 on TOEFL two years ago but I lost the score report, should I send it out?

Yes! That will be helpful.

I hear that Vanderbilt is very difficult to transfer into for some reason and that they hadn't recently been accepting many transfers at all for some reason.

vandyboy, you can send your scores...i think you can just go to toefl website and do that...

ah thanks brand_182...i dont' want to waste money on app then haha

haha well that's just what i've heard, so verify before giving up all together. But if you're looking for a good southern school, I hear Emory is VERY generous to transfer students, especially if you're a guy.

hey jslee1026,vandy is a decent school, i like its size and student body, but I dont like i can get a good job if i graduate from vandy, cause i am from nyc, vandy is only well known in the south....

brand_182,

If the OP desires to continue with an engineering focus, Emory may not offer the kind of program he is seeking.

You can also demonstrate your improvements in the English language through the personal statements. Make sure you write superb essays, and have at least 5-7 people, preferably the writing lab or GSIs, to check it.

I was actually referring Emory to jslee

thats bull. I got accepted by Emory and Im a guy and they were NOT generous. All the transfer students i spoke with here had the same amount of debt as I would have gotten if i would have accepted their offer....about 10 Gs a year

I'm referring to the acceptance rate - not financial aid.

Emory accepts over 30% of applicants; when that figure is broken down by sex, over 50% of males are accepted. I do not know how they are with financial aid.

oh, my bad lol. Finaid there sux!

wow it's surprising since Emory has one of the largest endowment per student in the nation.

yeah i know, i said the same thing to the financial aid counselor @ Emory. They dont have any money for transfers. The endowment is used to make the school pretty, increase their reputation and lure freshman applicants.

Okay so I 've been contemplating back and forth of where I want to transfer. Several years back Vanderbilt invited me to a summer program at their university for high school students. Now I think I want to go there...however considering I know only a little about vanderbilt can someone please tell me how to transfer and if I have a chance transferring from CC with a 3.98 G.P.A? How are their transfer acceptance rates? By the way are the way my ACT scored sucked in my opinion and I never took the SATs. Can someone just give me a profile of the student body as well i.e academically?
