Transfer Path to U of M

Basically, the first 2.5 years of my HS career weren’t great, and until I got on some medication, my GPA was poor. Since the change, my grades have been 100% perfect in all accelerated classes. High SAT, published research author, lots of extra-curricular, so I’m not at all worried about my future academic performance.

Regardless, I didn’t think I could get into UMich and didn’t apply (although after seeing some of my peers who did end up getting in, I do have to say I regret not applying a bit).

My question is this: I’m currently fumbling around attempting to decide between a focus on architecture/urban planning, psych, communications, or various permutations of them together, and I would like to end up transferring onto the Ann Arbor Campus. I did get into Michigan State and both the UMich Flint and Dearborn campuses. Is there any advantage to attending Dearborn over MSU? I know MSU is pretty decent for Psych, – although no U of M – but I’m mainly worried about transfer credits. How do credits transfer from Dearborn as compared to MSU, is there any advantage in terms of transfer applicant preference between the two universities, and overall, what is going to hurt me less financially in the long run?

I know this is prrrreeeeettyyyy broad but any counsel would be a help – even if not exactly specific to my sitch.

Also, I’d totally be open to staying at state for 4 years, but as both of my parents are professors there, I would prefer to not be under a microscope from their colleagues for 4 years (although my mom also taught at u of m for a long time too so I guess I have no way out bahaha).

also sorry if I did this incorrectly! I have no idea what the format for this website is, so please bear with me.

You can call and do talk to them any time. The advantage with transfer Tuesdays is you bring your transcripts and they sit with you and go over everything so there are no gaps or questions later. Many have found this very helpful to answer your specific questions.

I attended community college until I had my associates degree. I followed a similar path to you-- in that, I had mental health issues obstructing my ability to maintain a decent GPA (for the first couple years of HS).

I don’t know a whole lot about Dearborn, but I did transfer-- so…

For me, I went to Lansing Community College, it costed about 1000 dollars a semester (with financial aid). As a transfer student, you ask your advisors what classes are best when it comes to transferring into Umich. When I attended community college, there was a lot of limitations when I started getting into higher level classes (calculus 2 and beyond)-- but they’ll transfer as departmental credit; going towards a degree, but not qualifying as a pre-requisite.

IF you are hoping to keep costs low and you’re not part of a wealthy family (AKA: you qualify for financial aid), then I suggest transferring into Umich instead of attending MSU. My best friend’s family consisted of only her and her mom-- but MSU only offered 5k a year for her tuition (she owed 10k a year). On the other hand, my family makes more than hers, but Umich covered all of my tuition without a scholarship.

Dunno if that helps.
