Hello all,

I would like to ask one question which bothers me for so long. My undergrad is UC Berkeley and currently I am a first year PhD student at UH. However, I realize that I no longer interest in the UH PhD program because the research environment here is not rigorous and the research that I am doing is not interested to me at all.

Since I had worked at UC Berkeley and really loved the research's environment, I want to reapply to different school (like Rice University or Texas A&M, or UT...). But I do not know how could I address my issue with my adviser.

I really need an advice from the forum. Please help !

You would have to resign from the current program and reapply to the new school.

Hi Polarscribe,

Thank you for the reply. I understand that I have to resign from my program right now. The problem is that applying to the new PhD program usually requires the letter of recommendation from my supervisor. So I don’t know if he would have will to write the LOR for me. I don’t know what is an excuse to convince him.

Anyone that experienced with the situation like me , please help !

I know a person from my department that switched PhD programs after his first year. He had the same LOR from his undergraduate since he had strong bonds with his past PIs. I have no idea if this is the common practice, he’s the only person I know that was in that situation.
