Transfer ~ Please chance me! I need to know

Hi, so I want to transfer to William & Mary. Here are my stats:

High school:
-3.5 GPA weighted
-Two APs, one college level class
-Copy editor and co-editor in chief for school newspaper
-Ran track, but will not run in college
-26 ACT
-1100/1640 SAT

College:
-Stony Brook (state school where I live)
-3.08 GPA
-I took algebra this semester because I did poorly on the placement test
-Will be a copy editor again for college newspaper
-Biology major or psychology, I haven't decided yet

I know they tend to accept more instate applicants, I used to live in Virginia and still have a house there. Not sure if that will affect anything. Also, I'm African American, both parents from the Caribbean.

If any additional information is needed, I'd be happy to supply it :)

Glad you’re interested in transferring. Are you planning to apply for the fall 2011? If so, you may want to wait and apply for the spring 2012 or fall 2012 to give yourself time to bring up your college GPA. While not a minimum requirement, we prefer to see a 3.5 GPA or higher in what we consider to be college level courses (algebra for example is considered a high school level course so waiting to apply will allow you the time to take more advanced courses). We encourage students to take a mix of English, math, science and social science courses and have a 3.5 GPA or higher in order to be the most competitive applicant for transfer.

Certainly your involvement at Stony Brook and your cultural heritage will be considered and looked upon favorably as we review your application but our primary focus with transfers is the academic record in college.

If you’re interested, you can come to one of our Prospective Transfer Events to learn more about W&M and the transfer admission process ([William & Mary - Prospective Transfer Days](http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/applytransferstudent/prospectivetransferdays/index.php))

Wow, thank you very much for the quick reply and for the information. I may wait and apply for the spring then.

Happy to help. If you wish, you can attend a prospective transfer day or you can contact our Transfer Dean and ask to meet with her or work with her and she will be happy to assist you in the transfer process.

You can also await the results of this semester and see if you’re on your way to bringing up your GPA so that you know if you’re on the right track to becoming a competitive applicant.
