I'm writing my transfer application this November and I have few questions about the first transfer prompt to UC which is about my intended major. For this essay, would you recommend that I start with something like: "My intended major is..." or is it better to be creative? I'm kind of confused how I should begin and how I should address my ideas. I mean, I think the second prompt about where I come from can be creative but for this one I think it's better to be specific about why I want to get accepted. I wrote it a little bit formally. Any suggestions?

Hey there!
I am currently in the process of writing my personal statements. I would definitely steer clear of starting your essay that way. You want to pull the reader in and a generic statement like “My intended major is…” just kills it right of the bat, In my opinion. You want to be creative and stand apart from the crowd I’m sure you’ll think of something. Just start writing it and then you can focus on editing! What is your major btw?

Thanks for the feedback:)
I’m currently majoring in Sociology. I think you are right about starting the statement that way. It’s just really difficult to answer all parts to the prompt creatively…

My personal statement began with “My intended major is…” and I was accepted to everywhere I applied to, including Berkeley and UCLA! I think it’s fine to start like that, although you obviously don’t have to. But it’s much more important to make sure the statement as a whole gives a good idea of who you are and why you’re a good applicant, rather than worrying about getting a really killer first line.
