transfer question - major gpa or overall gpa?

Hello,
I currently attend UCR and I'm trying to apply for Winter 2007 admission to UC Irvine. I totally screwed up my freshman year and took a 1.0 gpa. I brought it up to a 2.45 this year, but it definitely still needs a bit of work. In high school, I had a 3.4 gpa and a 1340 on my SATs - so I know i'm THAT much of an idiot. My question is when I apply for transfer admission, will they even consider my major gpa or will they just look at the cumulative gpa? I am thinking about applying as an English major (4.0 in 3 english classes) but I don't know if that will work out. Any helpful response would be appreciated. Thanks.

From what I know, they look at both your cummulative gpa and your major gpa.

LOL wadahell happened ur freshman year?

another UCR guy eh.

I don't think it'll work...just being honest. 3 classes isn't going to be enough. People that use their major GPA have usually taken mostly courses applied to their major, but if you've taken 12 classes or so and only 3 are related to your major, they'll look at the overall GPA more. That's just a guess, but it seems it would make sense.

^ what brand said makes sense.

To the OP: what happened that caused your grades to bomb? If you have extenuating circumstances, perhaps you can redeem your gpa by filing for academic reknewal...Just a thought...

My mom had a malignant tumor and had to go through surgery...I had to take care of her for the next few months after that - so I wasn't able to completely focus on my studies. I didn't even find the time to withdraw, which was pretty stupid on my part. I am only now starting to get back on my feet, but I really want out of UCR - it's a terrible enviroment. How does academic renewal work by the way?

thats a damn good reason...just tell them.

so if you guys were me...you would go ahead with applying for winter transfer as well as academic renewal? i'm not exactly sure how high my chances are...but i know irvine is not much higher on the ladder than riverside.

Duper, if prestige and academic quality are on your mind...why aren't you looking at UCLA/UCB/UCSD? Just wondering...Anyways, yeah I would apply for both academic reknewal and winter transfer...Hope it works out for you...if you need any help whatsoever just ask me man =]

Well I would love to apply to other schools, but basically only Irvine is open for Winter 2007. Also, I was just looking through my school website and I can't find anything about academic renewal.

Talk to your counseler about the academic renewal.

Hmm, my friend is in a similar boat as you. He can either apply to a lesser ranked UC for winter transfer or apply for fall transfer to a higher ranked UC and have a great shot (namely Berkeley). Are you willing to wait? Or is transfering ASAP imperative? Who knows, if the academic renewal flies, you'd have a decent shot at ucla, cal and ucsd.

I really think it is key for me to get out of UCR at this point. I just don't know if I even have a shot with a 2.45 right now even with my circumstances. I guess my main concern is whether or not I can pull off a Winter 2007 transfer with my stats. My high school stats were decent and I know that my reasons for doing poorly should help me, but I'm just not sure if they will cover the poor gpa.

by the way, what are your friend's stats?

Duper,

I have a friend from my CC whose matriculating into UCLA this Fall. She had a sub 3.10 gpa. I read her personal statement and it was completely horrible. Though it did document her struggles as a minority living in poverty, it looked like a tenth grader had written it. Not that I'm the **** or anything, its just one would expect a clearer personal statement from a freakin English major. Needless to say, I was surprised when she told me she got into UCLA. With cases like her (though I do love her as a homie g), I sympathize with all the freshmen who ***** about the quality of transfers. In any case, she did get rejected to UCB.
