Transfer Question: Should I take Stats 430 or 101?

I'm an incoming Wharton transfer (coming from UCLA). At UCLA, I was a Math/Econ major, so I've already taken nearly all of multivariable calculus along with linear algebra, so, assuming everything transfers over nicely, I noticed that I'm essentially done with a math minor.

Now, I heard Stat-430 is one of Penn's hardest courses, but it's hard to put comments like this into perspective. How, exactly, does is it compare to Stat-101? Is it significantly more difficult? I'll admit, GPA is a bit of a concern, mainly because I'm only going to have 3 years of Penn coursework, but I'm willing to work hard.

It really depends on your background, what other courses you are taking, and how much work you are willing to put in. You really don’t need much math, but it requires some strong problem solving skills.

One way to get around it is to take Stat 101-102 and take Stat 430 as a Wharton elective later.

Right now, my schedule looks like:

BPUB203
MATH240 (I’m not too concerned about this course; at UCLA, Linear Algebra precedes differential equations, and we go all the way to Stokes’ theorem in our equivalent of MATH 114)
CINE118 (to satisfy a Global Environment requirement + Arts, Language and Culture – of which I have none)
INSR205

and any of STAT101, STAT430 or if I get into it, BPUB250

I can’t take any core classes because it keeps saying I have to contact the respective department for a permit, and I have absolutely no idea what that process even entails, so I’ll be doing Accounting/Finance/etc. come Spring when I’m acclimated.

So I think (aside from MATH240), my schedule is fairly easy. That’s why I’m thinking about doing STAT430 now.

Just a note, though: If I wasn’t gonna take STAT430, I probably wouldn’t take MATH240, either.

Take STAT430. If you were a math major, and unafraid of taking math240 at Penn, then go ahead and take stat430. The linear algebra and multivariate will help you with the math240, and if you’ve ever seen anything in combinatorics (ie, poker hands) or probability theory, stat430 will be fine.

Basically if you’re the kind of person who would’ve done math/econ, stat430 will be plenty manageable for you.

(I was a Wharton stat concentrator and Computer Science major / math minor)

STAT 430 is definitely not one of Penn’s hardest courses. Don’t be afraid of it and definitely take it. You will learn more than with 101.
