Transfer Question- Somewhat Low GPA, Hope to Attend UIUC

I am currently a Sophomore at a local community college. My GPA is a 2.75. I know, it's abysmal for the university I would like to attend. Let's just say sloth is my sin most abused...After this semester, however, I should have a 3.09, and after the next, a 3.35. I've heard that CC requirements are far less rigorous than those of high school. My ACT, if they'll even still look at that, was a 28, so I'm not worried about that so much. I already used my AP credit for CC credit, which should transfer. Do I have a decent chance of getting into UIUC with a 3.3? I'm afraid I won't be able to up it by the time I send them my transcripts, so, at best, it'll be a 3.09 by then.

My back-up schools are UIC, Wheaton, and NIU mostly, so I'm not stressing at getting into a decent school. I just want UIUC!

While I'm at it, although I am ultimately undecided, I'm leaning heavily toward the practice of law. I'd major in history or political science. Is UIUC still the best option?

Thank you.

To be competitive for a transfer into UIC, you need a GPA of at least 3.0. LAS is one of the easier colleges to transfer. ACT will not be asked as long as you have at least 30 credit hours.

3.3 sounds competitive for LAS in my opinion, but it will depend heavily on what classes you’ve taken. If you haven’t done so, go to the UIUC transfer handbook website and look at the requirements for your major. Take the required and/or recommended class equivalents at your community college and get A’s on them. By then, you will definitely have a shot! Call the admissions office and talk to a counselor if you’re confused about anything. Hope that helped!

I know this is very late, I somehow forgot about it…

Thank you both very much for your input.

I have done so, uiuctransfer! They only require two history classes and two english (one of which Ive been able to forego at my community college).

Right now my GPA is 2.89. I intend to take one more semester there and take the courses and ace them.

If I only take what UIUC requires, my GPA will be a 3.07, assuming I ace them.

If I add a class and ace it, it’ll be a 3.12. Another, 3.16. With a full 6 classes, acing all of them, I’ll have a 3.2, but by then I would have probably taken a class or two too many.

How’s it looking now? I’ll be sure to call a counselor.

Thanks again, uiuctransfer. You’ve been a great help and I’m excited at the mere thought of a shot!
