Transfer Question (Sorry for another "T.Q." title)

Hey,

I'm headed for a California CC, and I want to transfer to an ivy, preferably Cornell. Here's my question: Do High School grades and SAT's matter much when transferring after two years? I know you guys have probably heard this line before, but I was really stupid in high school and didn't do my best, thus explaining my question about the grades and the SAT score. I know that "stellar" extra curricular activities help, and I was wondering if this counted as stellar: currently I'm an intern for a State Senator, I have a part time job (I don't consider this an e.c.), and I'm in the honors program at my c.c. Furthermore, I plan on joining the Forensics Team at my college, and if I can, the school newspaper.

I hope that helps, and I really appreciate any response.

Thanks

While no one besides the admissions committee knows for sure, the general consensus on College Confidential is: the more competitive the university, the more likely the school is going to consider high school grades important, but this importance decreases as time goes on.

If you had students from your high school attend or apply to ivys, what GPA and extra curricular activities did they have? Admission to the most competitive schools is full of applicants who “just missed” being admitted for freshmen admissions, so you are starting from a disadvantage.

Quality extracurriculars are more important than quantity.

The college board doesn’t care if you retake the SAT in college.

Since you are starting from a Cali CC, you should check out the UCs too.

Check out the stickies in the transfer forum, because it has a lot of good, general transfer information.

Yeah, I also wanted to transfer to Berkeley, but I was just curious about the whole retaking of the SAT thing. I think I’ll give Cornell a call tomorrow and ask them. What do you think?

Thanks for the response.

definitely call them, cant hurt…
but i think generally, the SATs are made for high school students to ‘predict’ how well youll do in college, if youre already in college, then i dont think they really care… i know for a fact that many schools have a transfer policy that says:
if you havent taken the SAT’s and have been in college LESS than 1 year, then you need to take them.
thats saying, if youve been in college longer, theres no need to retake them… i personally never took them because im an intl student, and i just transferred to USC :)

if you go to a cali CC then definitely look into the UC’s as they take a lot of CC students… also, it would be a good idea to look up which CC is the best, yea they have rankings as well :)

for example, some CC’s dont send any kids to great schools while others send kids to ivy league schools every year… i read a post on here like a few months ago, a guy who was a professor at a NYC CC and there had just transferred 2 kids to brown, and 1 to yale… and there were several others going to other top schools so… :)

as for your EC’s, i think theyre good, definitely, but not ‘stellar’… also, your job should be listed, they need to know that youre doing something with that time :)
