I am a transfer student in a community college right now and I am set to graduate this fall and transfer to a 4 year college. My current GPA is a 3.1 (about to go up to a 3.2). My hs GPA is really bad due to my horrible sophomore year that I decided to hang out with the "bad kids" in order to "fit in" and belong in school. It affected my 2nd year gpa and my over all GPA is 2 points below a "C". I'm ashamed of my horrid grades. I can't even believe they are that bad. :(

When I first went to college, I went to a crappy for profit school which I thought I wanted to study fine art as a major. Well a year later I ended up failing 2 quarters worth of drawing and art classes. I realized that art was not for me no matter how hard I tried. I wasn't good at it. That messed up my current GPA, which I have been slowly raising since last year.

My goal by the end of Fall 2012 is to rise my GPA to at least a 3.4 or 3.5, since I'm doing good so far. It's been challenging to get my grades up, but hopefully when I transfer the admission to the colleges I am looking to apply at will see my hard work and motivation and forgive my bad grades from when I was a dumb teen that lacked motivation in HS.

My experience:
Was a total burn out in high school and earned C’s and D’s through all four years.

When I was 25 I started community college and 59 credits into that, I have a 3.9.
Was just accepted into UConn’s nursing program. I had to have 3 years of a language to be accepted… I did. I had 3 years of D’s in French in High School. Apparently that was good enough.

As long as its not a wicked competitive school, they will probably see that you are trying hard to bring up your grades. Just don’t apply to an art program.

It’s nice to hear other peoples stories like this. So far in school, I’m doing fine and my grades are improving. I also am doing some volunteer work and recently I became my school’s political club president. I hope this would “wow” the schools I’m going to apply too. I also have a few ECs I did in HS too that were impressive.

Just get the GPA up and replace lousy grades in core subjects with better grades and you will be fine. Focus on the core classes; nothing estoeric because 4 year institutions require a solid core before specialization and they will provide the specialization.
