Transfer Question

How common is it for a student to successfully transfer to LSA after just one year of college?

Meaning a Fall transfer as a Sophomore.

I'm currently trying to transfer into the Fall 2012 semester, anyone else in the same boat?

It depends. For those who got in or were borderline, one good semester could potentially get them in. But for those who weren’t that close as a freshman applicant, they will probably need to wait until at least Winter of their sophomore year to transfer in if not Fall of their junior year. I was just accepted as a sophomore for the Winter 2012 term and I was a borderline reject as a freshman. However, I bombed my last semester of high school and when I applied again as a sophomore applicant for Fall 2011, I was rejected within a month. The reason I got in this time, based on what I heard from the admissions counselors, is that I had a pretty strong record in high school for the most part and I had a fairly strong college GPA, taking demanding courses while attending a somewhat demanding college. So basically it’s those that got in or were borderline have a real shot as a sophomore applicant, everyone else needs to wait until junior year or at least 3 semesters. Good luck and Go Blue!

So, lets say all goes sour this time around, would the next step be to apply Winter term next year? I was always under the impression that out of all of the terms to apply to, Winter term would be the hardest to get into.

But it does make sense that by Winter Term next year they will have a full year of grades to look back on.

Yeah, if you get rejected as a transfer, you have the option of simply e-mailing the admissions office and to get your application moved to a different semester for consideration. You won’t have to pay more money or do anything else except send in your new grades. I definitely would advise you to speak with an admissions counselor in person, in Ann Arbor, if possible but if you live too far away, try to speak with them on the phone. I found that I got a lot of good information from them when I spoke in person and they just seemed much more helpful.

My son was borderline as a freshman in Fall '11 (3.6 UW and 31 ACT for LS&A) was rejected and then applied for Winter '11 and did not get in. They really want to see a semester or two of grades. He has applied for Spring (as Anthony mentions it’s just an email to take your rejected Winter app and move it to the next Spring or Fall).
