Transfer question?

Hello I am currently a sophomore at a 4th tier Texas state school. For my freshman year I attended Baylor an I did not like it at first and set my mind within a month that I would leave as soon as possible. I did not really have a lot of friends and my grades dipped a lot, to a 2.75. I also made the mistake of not applying for financial aid the next year, so even though the school grew on me, very little, there was still no chance of me going back. I ended up at UTEP, a really poor school where I am from and regretted it immediately. This year at UTEP I have done nothing but study and my grade point average is a 3.8, and am involved with 3 student organizations. I am now planning to transfer to UT Austin and am fairly sure I will gain admission.

But upon talking to my friend who attends Georgetown he told me that my huge improvement could get me into "better" schools. Taking into consideration my grade and e.c. gains, added in with a very compelling essay(I know it sounds arrogant but writing is my forte) which schools ranking wise could I get into.

I would love to go to the west coast maybe USC. It is ranked as 27th right now, would that seem like too much of a stretch. He told me that he knows people who went to Georgetown with less and told me that I could get in, but I don’t think anything in the top 20 is remotely possible. What are your opinions? Would a prestigious east coast school, I’m studying political science pre-law, really be a possibility for me?

Please be brutally honest, should I go for the gold, USC, Georgetown, or settle for UT.

what your hs stats? what is your role with these organizations? do you have leadership roles or are you just going to meetings?

honestly, this seems a bit ridiculous...you are having illusions of grandeur

you got a 2.7 at baylor your freshman year...you have a 3.8 ONE MONTH into school at a 4th tier school...as of right now you have a 2.75 from a less than competitive school, are about to go to your third school in 4 semesters...

i don't know what you mean by "prestigous," but georgetown and anything remotely within sniff of it are WAY out of the question...dont know about university of austin, but be happy if you can get in there

gl

bit of advice if you're planning on USC - it's not on the West Coast.

anyway georgetown is pretty hard to get into, it's as competitive as the ivy's (well, maybe not HYP but it's up there). its like a top 10 school, the kind of school students with 3.9's from good colleges strive for, not 2.75s. I'm not saying don't apply, I'm just trying to be realistic. I hear U Texas at Austin (i'm guessing that's what you mean) is a good college with a strong business program. I'm not sure if someone in your position would be 'settling' to go there, you might be reaching...
you said to be brutally honest, and I'm sorry. Just my advice. good luck wherever you end up.

this is the kind of insight i want.

In high school I was number 21 in a class of 450, my grade average was a 96, and my sat's were a low 1900. This was the week of midterms and my grades are a 3.8 at this school

I do not want to go to Georgetown, I am just saying that I have a friend who goes there and he says that there is a possibility that I could make it in, even though I am not going to apply. I am just asking if it is possible to make it to USC(southern cali), as I went there recently and really liked it.

I did not mean I wanted to go to a prestigious school, just if it was possible to make it in to a better school.

Honestly I like everything about Austin, and would not mind in the least going there, in fact I think it would be pretty great. I just really would like to make it out west I miss it ever since I moved down south.

thanks you guys

USC is pretty tough to get into. If you continue your strong upward trend you may have a shot though. You will have to stay for a while longer to do this. And as dufflebagjesus said, be more involved in your ECs.

You should also look into some other schools in California that you may be interested in. I would look into privates in particular as they tend to stay away from giving in-state applicants priority, thus giving out-of-staters a better chance. Good luck.

oh sorry, I thought you meant University of South Carolina, my bad!
anyway you have a much better chance at austin than georgetown. like grey said, it might be a good idea to wait and prove to them that you have a consistently high gpa.

ok that makes sense, thanks.

truth be told austin is a good school and has everything in a university that I like. But man I feel that USC just seems like its calling to me lol. Well I'll just wait out the year, see where my grades end up this semester and then decide then if I want to try to go to USC or stay in the state and head over to UT.

Yeah just stay where you are, try your hardest to maintain that upward trend, apply to both schools later, and see where you are once you get those packages in the mail. :)
